Classical of Traditional
Grammar
Descriptions of English and other
languages
were
based
on
the
grammars of the classical languages,
Greek and Latin. These descriptions
were based on an analysis of the role
played by each word in the sentence.
Structural Linguistic
In a structural description the
grammar of the language is
described in terms of syntagmatic
structures
which
carry
the
fundamental proposition (statement,
interrogative, negative, imperative,
and so on) and notions (time,
number, gender, and so on).
Transformational
Generative (TG) Grammar
The grammar of a language is not
the surface structures themselves,
but the rules that enable language
user to generate the surface
structures from the deep level of
meaning.
Language
variation:
view
language
as
part
of
a
communication
as
a
whole
language use contextually shows
considerable variety.
Register
analysis:
an
insubstantial
basis
for
the
selection of syllabus items.
Functional / Notional
Grammar
Functions are concerned with
social behavior and represent
the intention of the speaker or
writer.
Notion reflect the way in which
the human mind thinks.

The relationship between the two can be
best expressed in the form of this simple
equation:
Structure + context =
function
Meaning + context =
notion

We can identify two key ways in which results
