STANDARD TEST

Method for Direct Shear Test of Soils

Under Consolidated Drained Conditions
(INV E-154-13, ASTM-D-2435).
Presentado por:

OBJECTIVE
This test method covers the determination of the consolidated
drained shear strength of a soil material in direct shear, deforming
the sample to controlled speed.

IMPORTANCE AND USE

The direct shear test is suited to the relatively rapid determination of

consolidated drained strength properties because the drainage paths
through the test specimen are short, the test can be made on all soil
materials and undisturbed, remolded or compacted materials. There is
however, a limitation on maximum particle size.
The test results are applicable to assessing strength in a field situation
where complete consolidation has occurred under the existing normal
stresses.

APPARATUS
Shear Device: A device to hold the specimen
securely between two porous inserts in such
a way that torque is not applied to the
specimen.

CALIBRATION OF THE TEAM

Calibration for the equipment load-deformation characteristics need
to be performed on the apparatus when first placed in service, or
when apparatus parts are changed.

ANALYSIS OF RESULTS
In the graph 1. Shear force vs
displacement, the first effort sees in
the first phase that we are called it a
(effort of abundance).
The maximum effort is 31.29 Kpa. With
this value we can say that the soil is a
dense sand.
For the style of the graph and for the
residual effort that is 27.43 Kpa; which
is when the soil comes to his

CONCLUSIONS
The test is relatively rapid and easy to
carry out.
Is it an upset sample.
Is it a soil of high resistance to the
deformation, of high cohesion and of
good friction between particles.
Do these soils avoid accessions for
high loads that can resist.
Since this type of soil is a sand we do
not do the limits of atterberg.
