Raster Graphics
Give a definition of Raster Graphics
Raster Graphics are made up of bit maps and bit maps are
Images or Graphics made up by pixels. Each Pixel takes up a
specific part of the image. Thats why all file images that use
raster graphics or bit maps only have a set resolution and
increasing the resolution/size of the image can distort and clearly
pixilate the image reducing the images quality.

Vector Graphics
Give a definition of Vector Graphics
Vector Graphics differ to Raster graphics other than one bit taking
up one specific space on an image Vector uses Strokes or paths
they are curse points and have angles to them instead of Raster
graphics taking up computer space to show the image on a Vector
Image the computer represents the space in between the two
points. Resulting in better image quality when the image is
increased or decreased in size.

Raster Graphics

JPEG
Stands For

Joint Photographers Experts

Group

Used For/Example

Images on line that are used in

pretty much every website online.
E.G. Facebook, Twitter or Youtube.

Advantage

Its a widely adapted format used

over many platforms such as Mac
and PC and is used in many
platforms such as web browsers
and image editors.

Disadvantage

Loses quality over time due to

multiple edits and compression
and recompression. The format
does not support transparency so
in this case drawing logos or
buttons is it vital.

TIFF
Stands For

Tagged Image file Format

Used For/Example

On some programs popular with

designers programs like publisher.

Advantage

TIFF files can save multi page

documents in to one TIFF file. TIFF
files have the option to have
Lossless compression where they
dont lose any quality due to
compression.

Disadvantage

They are not widely used and

even if they are since their file
size is to big creators usually end
up saving a JPEG when the image
or project is finished to reduce the
file size.

GIF
Stands For
Used For/Example

Advantage

Disadvantage

Graphics interchange format

Images shown in short succession
to give the appearance of a video.
Used on many forms of social
media websites like Facebook or
funnyjunk.
Due to a GIF being a smaller file
size than a video they can be
used to display small clips of a
video and take up much less
space.
If the Gif is not optimised properly
they can take a long time to load
(depending on file size and
length.) Gifs can also be affected
by internet connection seen as
they are a procedure of moving
images they can be slowed down

BMP
Stands For
Used For/Example

Advantage

Disadvantage

Bitmap Image file

Similar uses to JPEG or TIFF

Bitmap images can be created

from already existing pixel data

Has a large file size and cannot be

shrinked or enlargened or it could
ruin the image this is why most
BMPs are printed in the original
file size.

Vector Graphics

PSD
Stands For

PhotoShop Document

Used For/Example

Used in creating or editing a piece

of original or already existing
work. Like if you wanted to edit
any image.

Advantage

You can freely edit an image and

supports transparency. Its widely
used for image creation and used
in many aspects of media like
magazine front covers.

Disadvantage

Very few programs recognise a

PSD file and are unable to open it
this is why after images are made
in Photoshop they are usually
converted into a JPEG.

AI
Stands For

Adobe Illustrate

Used For/Example

Used in adobe illustrate to create

images or edit already existing
images. Many examples could be
through Content creator websites
like deviantART.

Advantage

The advantage to an Adobe

Illustrate file is that they use
vectors so images can be scaled
big and they would lose no
definition.

Disadvantage

A disadvantage to AI is that they

are not supported an any other
programme but adobe Illustrate.

FLA
Stands For

Flash File

Used For/Example

In adobe Flash where they can be

used to create animations.

Advantage

FLA can produce large quality file

size with small images and can
include sound or videos.

Disadvantage

Its not a widely adopted format so

you wish to do something on Flash
you would have to convert images
into FLAs.

WMF
Stands For
Used For/Example

Advantage

Disadvantage

Windows Metafiles
Used for Logos or basic images.
Clip art uses the same feature.
You can freely increase the size of
the images and it will retain its
initial quality. It can also contain
both vector and bitmap
components.
Not widely used as a image file.

File Format
Capture and
Optimising

Compression
Definition

Advantage

Disadvantage

Compression Is when file sizes

are reduced by down grading
the amount of information
that is saved.

You can continue to compress an

image down to your required file
size

You will get image degradation

and the image will slowly degrade
over time. And some pixels that
the image used to have would
have been deleted to make the
file size smaller.

Image Capture
Method

Scanner

How is it used for image

capture of graphics

You can scan images on pieces of

paper and replicate the copy's and
upload them onto your computer.

Method

Camera

How is it used for image

capture of graphics

Method
How is it used for image
capture of graphics

You can take pictures of anything

you want.

Graphics Tablet
You can create your own images
or you can edit already existing
images and draw onto them.

Optimising
Why would you optimise?

How can you optimise?

Advantage to optimising

Disadvantage to optimising

To make images on the

internet easier to download or
view on a website.
You can do it through Photoshop
by reducing bit depth and size.

Images are optimised and made

smaller not losing quality and they
are made easier to view online.
Images should not really exceed
500 pixels really limiting some
images you can put onto sites.

Storage

File Size
What could affect a Working
Scale (Photoshop) document
file size?

Files made on Photoshop

often have large file sizes due
to a large amount of layers
and shapes. File size also
relates to the pixel
dimensions.

How could you reduce the file

size of a Working Scale
document without affecting
quality?

The most obvious solution is

changing the file type, however if
it needs to remain Working Scale,
the Bicubic Automatic image type
can be changed to Bicubic sharper
to keep the image quality high
during scaling.

What is an advantage of
scaling up images before
exporting?

Scaling up images before

exporting allows them to be
resized without losing quality after
exporting, making resizing much
easier.

What is a disadvantage of

Scaling up images often makes

File Naming Conventions

What naming conventions
could you use when creating
your video game assets?

When naming files its

important to keep things in
certin folders relating to their
relative content and by doing
so would help keep large
projects from becoming
messy. Naming image relative
to what it looks like and go
from there keeping things in
order.

Why is it a good idea to

accurately name your assets?

Not accurately naming assets can

lead to a messy set of documents,
and can mean that it is hard to
find certain documents. Naming
something specific can also help
find the image in the search tab
when you want to find that certain
source quick.

Asset Management
Why would you use folders
when storing your assets?

Folders help when it comes to

organisation and keeping
things organised especially in
a large project can help keep
things under control or help
with things not being
accidentally misplaced in a
different folder or deleted.

What folders would you create I would create the main folder for
and what would you save
the course and have different
within them
folders inside for images research
and analysis I would maybe create
a sub set of folders within these
folders to help keep a track of
certain files or images that I
needed for the course.
