What is communication?
is the process of creating shared meaning.
At its core, communication involves forming
and transmitting messages to achieve
mutual understanding or to incite action.

3 Types of Communication

Intrapersonal communication

Intrapersonal Communication
Type of communication we engage in when we talk to ourselves.
Rarely occurs but it happens in our heads as we think through our
choices ,strategies, and possible consequences of our actions.
Takes place subconsciously
Similar to thinking aloud
TALKING TO OURSELVES
Example: Rehearsing of what you are going to say before telling
your adviser the reason why you were not able to attend the
officers forum.

Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal Communication
Most common type of communication
To convey a message to another person.
The target person is a familiar person to us .
Participants are engaged directly .
It also includes dyadic communication and small group communication
In dyadic exchange ,2 persons communicate directly with each other
Small group communication consists of three or more persons
the essential element in both types of interpersonal communication is
direct, person to-person interaction.- Brooks and Health (1989)

The more personal we interact with someone, the more


interpersonal is our relationship with them.
Developing effective interpersonal skills and
relationships is a process that begins when we are born
and we continue to develop as we grow older.
INTERPERSONAL COMPETENCE- the ability communicate
effectively.

Messages
- the content of the communication

May be verbal or non-verbal


Who- we choose to speak to
What- actions; topic; words ; facial expressions
Can be auditory, visual, gustatory, olfactory, tactile, or situational manipulational

Channels

medium which a message travels

Noise
any interference that may affect how the people will send or receive the message
Environment, physical discomfort, psychological states, and intellectual ability.
Sight, sound, smell, feel of environment

Feedback
information received in exchange for messages we sent

Public Communication

Public Communication
Communication situation where a speaker delivers a message before an
audience.
There are two forms: public speaking and mass communication
Public speaking is a sustained formal presentation
-the audience primarily to function as receivers and responders
-a prepared speech is appreciated if delivered orally.
-example: when the president delivers the SONA to an audience in congress.
Mass communication
-extremely large audience mediated by audio and/or visual means.

Public Speaking is a life skill

the types of communication that take place.
1. Chatting via internet
2. Getting information from a clerk in the Registrars Office.
3. Broadcasting the news on air.
4. The president delivering the SONA.
5. Talking with your father about your crush.
