2x3x2

We can write totally 36 combinations

for structural formulae

P-no. of speeds in the shaft and X the

number of steps between the speeds
in the shaft

P-no. of speeds in
the shaft and X
the number of
steps between the
speeds in the shaft

Selection of structural
diagram

Transmission ratio imax/imin between shafts should be less than 8

The addition of diameters should be minimum which can be
related to X values. X1X2 X3
No. Of gears in the last shaft should be minimum. 3 max. or 4 for
feed box.
No. of gears in the preceding may be more.
imax X imin= 1 desired for least gear box design
Max. reduction in last stage and less reduction in other stages.
This permit intermediate shafts to rotate at high speed low torque.
Dia. Of intermediate shafts will be smaller.
Structural formula is given by p1(X1)x p2(X2)xp3(X3)
P- no. of speeds in each stage, X characteristic
X1=1; X2=p1;X3=p1.p2;X4=p1.p2.p3
Transmission ratio between shafts = p(u-1) Xu
No. of stages =U and no. of possible structural diagrams = U
No. of shafts = U+1

Construction of Ray diagram

Calculate and determine the speeds using calculations or

table
Determine the different structural formulae
Determine transmission range between shafts (I &II, II & III )
which should be less than 8 for the corresponding
Determine the optimum formula based on transmission ratio
and d min criteria
Draw horizontal lines (=number of speeds if the motor speed
is greater than max. speed more lines required)
Vertical lines =U+2
Calculate the no. of reductions between different stages
Consider the max. reduction as 8 and start the construction
from last stage and min. speed.
The reduction for imax and imin should be considered based on
the limiting value table provided for different Table 2.10
Concave shape is desired
Start the construction from last speed in last shaft and end it
with the motor speed.

No. of gears = 2(p1+p2+p3+..)

Sum of no. of teeth in meshing gears = LCM x an integer (1,2,..) should be greater than tsmin.
Assume the integer accordingly. For this case the integer should be 2 or more

Take first ratio 4/1

Total no. of teeth =. of 85x2=170;
The no. of teeth in first gear = 170x(b1/(a1+b1)
and the no. of teeth in 2nd gear t2 = 170-t1. Hence t1=34 and t2=136;; t3&t4 has to be
obtained by 10/7 ratio

Condition: ts min < LCM which is ts , if not multiply LCM with 2,3,4

Again for intermediate shafts, we have to check for interference i.e size of largest
gear in I shaft should not interfere with next shaft gears..
m(t max +2) for the I shaft < m (ts/2) for the II shaft where m is the module
