SCHEME
PRESENTED TO
THE HONORABLE COMMISSIONER
RIVERS STATE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT
RIVERS STATE SECRETARIAT
PORT HARCOURT,
RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA
Presented by www.jeginconsult.com

Introduction

A bus stop is a designated place where buses stop for passengers to board or alight
from a bus. These are normally positioned on the major road to act as temporary
shelter for commuters from the excesses of the weather.

A good busshelter is an essential part of any successful urban mass-transit

system and has come to be part of the fabric of a modern city.

Most of these passengers use buses and they waiting for the buses can be not so
pleasant experience if proper protection is not offered. Hence the installation of bus
stops can be one big step towards providing convenience to the individuals waiting
for the buses. The size, kinds and design of bus stop must take account to improve
the esthetics of the city that it would be located.

But unfortunately the present state of the bus stops in Port Harcourt are a
embarrassment to behold. The Bus stop have been to be unique welcoming
platform for visitors to a city. A good percentage of visitors into city arrive Port
Harcourt by road by buses so the bus shelters are the first welcome spot for most
visitors.

That is what there is a need to construct and install bus stops that are befitting of a
mega city like Port Harcourt.

Our Present bus Stops

In the metropolis of Port Harcourt, there are 46 bus-stops from Oyigbo to Isaac Boro
Park. These bus-stops were commissioned by Skye Bank. The commissioning of
these bus-stops was aimed at improving the general appearance of Port Harcourt
City and improving the public transportation system in the city by providing
designated bus-stops for taxis and buses.

The bus stop were designed with the aim of just functionality excluding the
essentials of the design

Currently, these bus-stops are now in a state of utter dilapidation as there has been
no maintenance of the bus-stops.

It has been realized that bus-stops are extremely under-utilized and can be more
beneficial, not just for the sake of the public transportation system but also for the
following reasons:

Government Revenue

Employment Opportunities

Aesthetic Improvement of the City.

ADOPT A BUS-STOP SCHEME

We are proposing a twenty year lease for all bus stop along the route from Oyibo to
Isaac Boro Park on the Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway.

The Adopt A Bus-stop scheme allows for the bus stop to be leased to the various
corporate entities at a yearly lease. The yearly lease allows the bus stops to be
branded in the colors and symbols.

The Adopt A Bus-stop scheme would be a means of maintenance and revamping of

the present bus stop system of Port Harcourt Bus Route at no extra cost to the Rivers
State Government.

The proposed lease would give Jegin consult the sole right to source for corporate
entities to lease out the bus stop stand. It would also act as a means of providing
routine maintenance of the bus stops.

Benefits Of The Adopt A Bus stop

Scheme

The Adopt-A-Bus stop Scheme has been conceived bearing the following points:
i.

ii.

iii.

iv.

State Revenue Source Jegin Consult can offer the bus-stops on a lease to
major corporations, thereby creating income for the government. At an average
annual lease of One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira per Unit. The
government is expected to make a minimum annual revenue of Sixty Nine

Employment Opportunities The installation and maintenance of these busstops will create employment for the Nigerian workforce. Also city officers will be
employed to ensure the bus-stops are not used for ulterior activities.

beautify the environment of Port Harcourt City.
