IS THAT A BOY OR

A GIRL?
Sam Maglinao

Gender stereotyped clothing

What women typically wear:
More feminine, tighter/ flattering apparel
Hair down and light to moderate make
up
More polished outfits

What men usually wear:

Larger and baggier clothes (primarily
because of size difference)
Can get away with looking casual in
sweats and t-shirts or shorts and t-shirts
Time of day usually doesnt change
appropriateness of apparel

Reactions
Friends (all boys):
such a cute little boy little
tomboy
Kinda weirded out
Looked for cues in an unfamiliar
situation.

Public reactions:
Girls: more judgmental
looking
Guys: Confused
Most people just glanced
and looked away
Others looked for cues
from my frineds

Relation to class
Benevolent sexism- cute little boy
cute little tomboy
People looked for cues to see how
others were reacting, so they can know
how to react
People conform because they dont
want to feel peculiar
Gender normative constructs

Personal Reflection
SO uncomfortable the entire time
Definitely something I wouldn't do
again
Changed my view on how some
LGBT people may feel, when they
choose to dress like that
Understand why conforming
makes us more comfortable
