Purpose
It provides low-interest loans, interest-free credits and grants
to developing countries.
It provides Monetary & Technical assistance.
It helps developing and under-developed nations of the world.
To Help in Reducing Poverty, Develop an Investment
Environment, Promote Socio-economic Growth through
Investment, Increase Job Opportunities, Promote research
and Training Opportunities.

RECONSTRUCTION AFTER NATURAL DISASTERS

EARTHQUAKE 2005

Damaged around 575,000 rural houses, 73,000 dead, over 3 million


people without shelter.

Government created the Earthquake Relief and Reconstruction


Authority (ERRA).

The World Bank has committed US$870 million for earthquake


recoveryand reconstruction, including support for housing and
livelihood.

Homeowners are given around US$3,000 in installments to build


quake-resistant homes .

Rehabilitation of an estimated 463,000 houses have begun and is at


various stages of completion.

World Bank assisted Pakistan in the assessment of earthquake


damages.

FLOODS 2010

Affected over 14 million people.

The scale of destruction exceeds that of the 2005 earthquake.

Around 723,000 houses have either been destroyed or damaged.

Crop loss is estimated at $1 billion.

Caused an estimated $9.7 billion in damage to infrastructure, farms,


homes.

World Bank assisted Pakistan in assessing the extent of damage.

Around $900 million of financial support from the World Bank.

IMPROVING LEVEL OF EDUCATION

Schooling on average, boys complete five and girls two and a


half years.
Providing assistance to the Government of Pakistan in
education reforms.
Strong focus on primary and secondary education.
Assisting the government in improving the quality of higher
education, technical and vocational training system.
Started around19 projects that supported primary education
in Pakistan totaling $1.365 billion.

IMPROVING HEALTH CONDITIONS

HEALTH CONDITIONS IN PAKISTAN

Health problems like Polio, HIV/AIDS, Maternal health, Child Mortality,


Tuberculosis, Malaria etc.

Pakistan is still facing Polio diseases where as most of the countries of


the world are Polio free.

Pakistans Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) is funded by World Bank.

World Bank approved two projects US$42.71 million in 2003 and US $


74.27 million in 2006.

The project will assist Pakistans efforts through procurement, timely


supply and effective use of the oral polio vaccine (OPV).

Increased child mortality rate in rural areas than in urban areas.

High Maternal Mortality rate in Pakistan.
