Introduction
Dear learners,
Having difculty in m
ultiplying polynomia
ls with
degree more than 2?
Well, worry no more!
Because
this SIM is purposivel
y made for you! This
aims to
help you improve yo
ur skills in multiplyin
g
polynomials using la
ttice method.
By the way, this SIM
needs your knowledg
e on
laws of exponent and
other algebraic oper
ations,
arranging polynomia
l in descending order
and
ascending as the case
may be.
So lets begin, have
fun!

GUIDE CARD
Multiply :
(3x2+4x-3)(5x3+4x2-3x+4)

This rectangle m x n (m is
the degree of the multiplicand
plus one while n is
determined by the degree of
the multiplier plus one) is our
working area called lattice
rectangle. this will be used
throughout the process of
solving.

Note: Factors must be in

descending order with
complete exponent.

The multiplicand is placed

along the top of the lattice
rectangle, so that each term
is the header for one column
of the cell.
The multiplier is placed on the
left side of the Lattice
rectangle, so that each term
is the header for one row of
the cell.
( refer to the figure on the
right)

Make lines
horizontal/vertical and
get the product of the
numbers and put it to
the cell where their lines
intersect.

Can you see diagonal lines? Add up all the
numbers in the cell where the diagonal line
intersect. To find the leading term, just copy the
digit on the upper right most part then add the
degree of the 2 factors to form part the degree of
the product. The next terms will just follow in a
descending order.

ACTIVITY CARD
Lets do this Lattice
Lets first have an example:

Notice that there is a

missing term in the
multiplier. There is no
quadratic term, so we must
insert 0x2 to the expression.
Notice that the constant
term is missing in the
multiplicand but the
exponents are arranged in
descending order.

x7+11x6+38x5+37x4-8x3+36x2+80x+0 or
x7+11x6+38x5+37x4-8x3+36x2+80x
Note: You can already eliminate constant term o of the
multiplicand for the result is just the same.
Now its your turn!
(2x2+15x-18)
(x3+4x2+3x-1)
