NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
BENEFITS
Network
Rollout
Backhaul
interface(s)
configuration
BS automatically
selects best
backhaul option
(Ethernet, IN-band,
WiFi)
Base station

automatic
discovery of all key

Network
Operation
Load Balancing
BSs communicate
traffic load to each
other (access and
backhaul side) and
act accordingly
Dynamic Base

changes
due to various
reasons network

Network
Growth
New Base station

network
this BS and
neighboring BSs
reconfigure

NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
FUNCTIONS
SON Link Control
SON Agents Group cooperation
SON Agent - SON server communication
Base Station Group Traffic Balancer
Congestion Control Protocol
QoS Multiple Path Routing Protocol
QoS Aware Backhaul Load Balancing

NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
SON Link Control
Base Station (SON Agent) discovers SON
Server and obtain list of cooperation
group.
Base Station (SON Agent) create secure
link with all active members of
cooperation group.
When direct communication between
SON agents is not possible SON server
relay communication channels.
Communication paths speed and latency
is monitored and best link is selected.

NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
SON Agents Group Cooperation
Base Station (SON Agent) exchanges
Radio and Traffic measurements.
The critical BS events are communicated.
The coincidence events are used for
group RF operation optimization.
The Base Stations traffic load is
distributed.

NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
SON Agent
- SON Server
Communication
Base Station (SON Agent) reports Radio

and Traffic measurements.

Base Station (SON Agent) is messaging
BS events.
The SON Server is messaging RF
corrections to SON Agents group.
The SON Server is relaying SON Agents
information to SON Agents group.

NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
Base Station
Group Traffic
The network Balancer
traffic performance is

observed.
Mobile stations are distributed among
Pico Base stations to balance traffic load.
Traffic load is distributed according to
different decision rules.
The SON server is influencing Mobile
Station distribution among SON Agents
based on predictions.
The traffic prediction and Mobile Stations
distribution are calculated from long
term statistic collection.

NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
Congestion Management
The backhaul could be traffic congestion
point in Pico Base Station networks.
The backhaul traffic capacity is
monitored.
Several actions are performed when
congestion is predicted or detected:
Mobile stations are moved to other SON group
members.
Egress QoS policies are applied at backhaul
link.
Ingress QoS policies are applied at 4G Access
points.

NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
QoS Multiple
Path Routing
Protocol
Applicable when
inband backhauls are

used.
Multiple shortest paths are calculated
based on QoS parameters.
Latency, available backhaul bandwidth,
sector usage are main parameters used
for Shortest Path calculation.
SON group routing interfaces are self
configured.
SON interface to operators backhaul is
standard routing protocol.

NNI Node-to-Node
Interface
QoS Aware
Backhaul Load
Balancing
The QoS Multipath
Routing protocol

provides multiple shortest paths based

on QoS parameters
The traffic is routed to all backhaul
interfaces.
The traffic is routed based on deep
packet inspection.
Signaling and Voice traffic are routed to
interface with lowest latency.
The internet traffic is routed to interface
with maximum available bandwidth.
