Shape Task

Shape Task

Evaluation
What did you like about your
image?
I like the fact that even though Im not goo at art, the shape
method really works for a good and simple comic image.

What would you improve if you did

it again?
I would use the warp tool more often as that really works for
bending the shapes round to make something like a beak or a
pair of wings.

Rotoscope

Evaluation
What did you like about your
image?
By using the same shape method plus some little adjustments
to the rotoscope I can make a pretty good comic like face of a
person.

What would you improve if you did

it again?
I would like to of put more detail into the hair, as the hair was
good but it just looked too simple compared to the rest of the
face.

Film Quotes

Film Quotes

Evaluation
What did you like about your
image?
That I can very easily get a quote and just paste it onto the
picture. Also I used some little adjustments to make the text
nicer to match the image.

What would you improve if you did

it again?
I would use a different style to make the image with. Like
fitting the quote into the character. Given more time I could of
done that.

Text Based

Text Based

Text Based

Evaluation
What did you like about your
image?
The warps and distorts I used on my name, makes it look
pretty good compared to just having my name in a plain text.

What would you improve if you did

it again?
Not much, I might use a different style of how to bend the
text, or I might give it a different shadow.

Comic Book

Comic Book

Evaluation
What did you like about your
image?
The filter I chose for it on the first picture made it look poster
comic like, and on the second picture I like the two colours I
added in and the jagged middle.

What would you improve if you did

it again?
I could of used different filters to give a different style and feel
to these pictures

Photo Story

Evaluation
What did you like about your
image?
I like the filter I chose for it, as it makes the set of images
more comic like for style.

What would you improve if you did

it again?
I would add more close up shots, to put more detail in the
keys.

Illustration

Evaluation
What did you like about your
image?
The picture is simple and just shows the simplicity of the
character I drew, not much detail

What would you improve if you did

it again?
If I was good at art and drawing I would of improved it greatly,
with good detail and facial features

arrative Environment

Evaluation
What did you like about your
image?
I like the different colours for the trees, so every tree looks
slightly different and brings out the depth of the forest. I also
like the style and size of the moon as it brings out the night in
the image

What would you improve if you did

it again?
If I had more time to do it again, I would add more depth to
the forest to make it look like the forest was endless

The Lion, the Hyena and the Rabbit
http
://www.worldoftales.com/African_folktales/African_Folktale_41.
html
Only 3 characters, the lion, hyena and a rabbit
The story is quite short, good for a short children's story
There is no defined location, making it very open ended but it
could be in Africa due to 2 of the characters being African
orientated. But I might change the location to a village in
England where the animals have their farm.
I could adapt this story for the young age, so the animals
dont eat each other, instead they dont get anything from
the harvest of the animals farm. I could also replace the
Hyena with an animal that kids in England know, like a dog.

Ideas
Brabo and the Giant
http://www.worldoftales.com/
European_folktales European_folktale_10 .html
This story is a little bit long but it can be shortened
There are 2 main characters, the first is the giant called
Antigonus and a Belgium man called Brabo and the other
characters are captains who are bullied into paying the giant
money for going into his country, otherwise they have their
hands cut off and they will be thrown into the river.
The location is the Belgium. Specifically the story says it takes
place near Antwerp.
To adapt this story for a younger audience, I could change it so
the captains who dont pay are thrown in the dungeon rather
than have their hands cut off and then having the captains
thrown into the river to drown.

Ideas
The Legend of the Giants Causeway
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant%27s_Causeway# Legend
There are only 2 characters in one of the adaptations, Fionn the
Irish giant and Benandonner the Scottish Giant, but the other
adaptations have Fionns wife in the story
The story is short, and is easy to put in a childrens book
The story takes place on the north coast of Northern Ireland
The original story consists of Fionn beating Benandonner in a
fight. To keep it more for the child audience, I could do the other
adaptation which is where Fionn disguises himself as a baby and
when Benandonner sees him, he thinks that if the baby is big
Fionn must be a huge giant. Benandonner then runs away,
destroying the causeway as he runs.
To adapt the story to make it an easy for a child to read, I could
rename Fionn to Finn and Benandonner to Ben

First Mood Board

Observations

The first mood board showed, what type of terrain will be in

this book.
The book will be mainly set on the hills and cliffs of the
coast. The hills will be a dark green as seen in two of these
pictures.
The main focus would be he causeway itself, with the
hexagonal shaped pillars for the bridge and causeway
remains.
The violent seas against the rocks and cliffs can be seen in
quite a few of the images.
The style of the book will be rotoscope on Photoshop, Im
doing this because I like this style of art, as its simple and
nice as seen in the third mood board

Second Mood Board

Observations
The second mood board showed the differences and styles
of the two giants in the story
Finn has been portrayed as a mighty hero. So based on the
selection of images I have of him, the hero style is what Im
aiming for.
Ben on the other hand, has been portrayed as a brute of a
giant, thats ugly and evil. He was designed to be the
unlikeable one based on his bad facial features. But for my
book I want to make Ben look 5x bigger than Finn, and I
want to make him look like a caveman sort of giant, like in
some of the images I have of him.
The style the characters will be done in, will probably be
rotoscope, as thats a style I like a lot with characters, itll
be like the images on the third moodboard.

Third Mood Board

Observations

The third mood board shows the art style, I plan on using
for the book
Rotoscoping is good technique to use as the comic, bright
pictures used in rotoscoping will appeal to this young
audience
This style will be used throughout the book, with colors
such as green and blue being used the most for the sea and
for the green landscape found around the Giants Causeway

Story Overview
Legend Of The Giants Causeway
This is a story about two giants who argue over which is the best, Ben decides
to challenge Finn to a fight to end the arguing. Finn accepts only to find out
from his wife that Ben is 5x bigger than Finn. After being told this, he knows
hell lose. So him and his wife make a plan where Finn disguises himself as a
baby, when Ben sees the baby he thinks if Finns Son is that big. Finn must be
5x bigger than Ben, when Ben realises this he runs all the way back to
Scotland, destroying the bridge he created. What remains of the bridge
becomes the Giants Causeway we see today.

Production Methods
The art style I will be using to create pictures for this book will be
the Rotoscoping technique used in Photoshop, as the audience is
young using this comic style art technique will appeal to this age
range. The layout of the book will be Text on one page with a
picture opposite, by doing this the book will look more simple for
that audience Im going for.

Audience
The age range for this book will be 6-10 years old, the book will
appeal to boys of the 6-10 year old range. The Giants Causeway is
a very popular natural landmark in the UK, and the legend is known
by the people in Ireland, therefore the book will be sold in the UK
and Ireland. I would like the book to be priced at a price for the
middle and lower class people can buy for there children. In 2015
the average price for a childrens book is 5.40, so I would like the
price to be 5 or lower to fit the demographic.
Deadline
19th November 2016

What are the strengths of the proposal?

What areas of the proposal need further work?

The proposal goes into detail on the storyline, and

links in with the real location that is present in the
UK making it a potential selling point. I especially
liked the storyline and how it has been adapted
from it predecessor. I also liked the choice in
format as it will make viewing much simpler.

Negative factors that require improvement are the

lack of the advantages and disadvantages. Simply
by mentioning the positives of a PDF being a
secure document but bad for editing would do the
job. Or to go into a little more detail, suggest that
the storyline may be a little to complex for children
to understand, and it might be worth a small
session of simplification.

What are the strengths of the idea generation?

What areas of idea generation could have been

further developed?

The listed ideas in idea generation are good

choices with large annotations written next to them.
My favourite part about the generation would be
the
Summarising of the characters just before the
summary of each story, it gives a deeper insight
into the story and makes reading the summary
more interesting because of the small factor of
knowledge provided before hand.

I felt as if the entire idea section lacked imagery

and made trying to picture how the story would
look like after adaptations much more difficult,
Adding some clipart of a cartoon character with
some relevance to the story, or even a locational
scene related to the Giants Causeway, just
something to allow a more picturesque though
process.

What are the strengths of the proposal?

What areas of the proposal need further work?

Your story overlay is clear and descriptive

giving me a clear image of what to expect.
Clear idea of what you want your book to look
like which will result as a strength when moving
on within your project.

Consider making your audience aimed for just

males and young female children are
stereotypically into princesses and fairies etc.
where as giants are large and strong and scary,
the boys are more likely to want to read this in
an overall percentage.

What are the strengths of the idea generation?

What areas of idea generation could have been

further developed?

Extremely detailed which shows youve really

tried to think into detail with each idea you have
put forward.
Mood boards include of relevant images for you
chosen idea.
Chosen idea mind map show structure and
detail.

Perhaps research your character and setting

design but in a more child friendly way. If your
book is aimed at young children you want
characters that the children can enjoy reading
about, not characters who are going to frighten
them and perhaps make them not want to read
the book.

What are the strengths of the proposal?

What areas of the proposal need further work?

Really well thought out and ideas are presented

clearly and effectively. The style of the characters
is well outlined and how you will produce them. It is
evident that you have a clear understanding of the
plot which is portrayed through the language used
and how the story flows.

The audience needs more description and work.

Include why you have chosen this specific
demographic and include their
interests/characteristics. Possibly include a
description of how the style links to the target
audience and why its effective.

What are the strengths of the idea generation?

What areas of idea generation could have been

further developed?

The description of each idea is really well

described and clearly outlines why it would be
suitable for a children's book. Mind map is really
descriptive and indicates the plot, ideas and
characters. Mood boards are good and well
explained. The explanations of the mood boards
allow others to clearly understand what youre
trying to achieve overall.

Add images to the mind map to really put forth your

ideas. Possibly add small illustrations and colours.
The mood board could do with a more creative
layout. Add font and colour swatches/colour palette
and give examples of why these colours are used.

Feedback Summary
Sum up your feedback.
The strengths of the proposal consisted of comments of good detail and is presented
clearly. The improvements for the proposal consisted of comments about making specific
detail about why I chose the demographic I chose and for making advantages and
disadvantages for the PDF files.
The strengths for my idea generation consisted of comments about, how detailed the
summary of each of the characters, how detailed and structured my mood board and mind
map was and how suitable my book will be for children and how I would tweak that idea.
The improvements consisted of comments about, lack of imagery to see what my story is
actually going to look like, and how child friendly the book is going to be. And to add
images to the mind map.

Which parts of your feedback do you agree with and why?

I agree with how detailed and structured, my proposal and idea generation is, as I spent
time making sure the person who reads this knows what Im doing with the book. I also
agree with the comments about how I needed to make the mood boards more specific to
know what the book is going to roughly look like.

Which parts of your feedback do you disagree with and why?

I disagree with the comments on how the book needs to be more child friendly instead of
having big giants that would scare children. The Scottish giant (Ben) is meant to look like
a brute to show that he is the bad guy in the situation. I cant have two very handsome
giants as it would confuse the younger audience about who is bad.

Original Script
Ulster is the most Northern of Irelands ancient kingdoms. Its
landscape is fabulously beautiful it has towering cliffs and
rocky hills, winding rivers and scooped-out lakes that look like
they could have been made by the hands of slightly crazy
giants.
There are many stone tombs here, five thousand years old,
made of enormous boulders that could not possibly be lifted by
one man, or even a whole family of ordinary men. For many
years the local people have named them Giants Graves
Stories are told of one great Irish Giant, Finn, whose most
fearsome enemies were the Scottish giants. Finn was so angry,
and determined to get at them, that he built a whole causeway
from Ulster across the sea to Scotland. He built it of unusual
six-sided cobblestones, so they would fit neatly together like a
honeycomb, and they made a very pretty pavement indeed!

Original Script 2
One day he shouted a challenge to the Scottish giant Benandonner, The Red Man, to cross the
causeway and fight him. But as soon as he saw the Scot getting closer and closer on the
causeway, he realised Benandonner was much, much bigger than he had imagined! Finn
skidaddled back home to the Fort-of-Allen in County Kildare, and told his wife hed picked a fight
but had thought better of it now.
Finn heard the stamping feet of Benandonner from Kilcock, and when those feet got to
Robertstown, Finn had to stuff five pounds of moss into each ear. Red Mans spear was as tall
and thick as a Round-Tower, and he used it to knock on the door of the Fort-of-Allen. Finn would
not answer the door, so his wife shoved him in the great bath with a couple of sheets over him.
Finns wife, Oonagh, thought quickly. She opened the door to Benandonner saying,
Sure its a pity but Finn is away hunting deer in County Kerry. Would you like to come in anyway
and wait? Ill show you into the Great Hall to sit down after your journey.
Oonagh invited Red Man to look around the room, and showed him what she said were some of
Finns possessions.
Would you like to put your spear down? Just there next to Finns - It was a huge fir tree with a
pointed stone at the top.
Over there is Finns shield. - It was a block of building-oak as big as four chariot-wheels.
Finns late for his meal. Will you eat it if I cook his favourite?
Oonagh cooked a cake of griddle-bread baked with the iron griddle pressed inside it. Red Man
bit it hungrily, and broke three front teeth. The meat was a strip of hard fat nailed to a block of
red timber; two back teeth cracked. He was given a five-gallon bucket of honey-beer to drink.
Would you like to say hello to the baby? Wait! - Ill have to feed her first!

Original Script 3
Oonagh threw a loaf of bread to the huge baby in the bath-cradle and, peeping out from a
huge sheet-like dress and bonnet was Finn MacCool himself, contentedly sucking his
thumb. Benandonner said he wasnt much good with babies. The honey-beer made him
feel woozy, and he asked to go outside to clear his head.
Oonagh showed Red Man out, where the gardens were scattered about with boulders as
tall as the giant.
Finn and his friends play catch with these rocks. Finn practises by throwing one over the
Fort, then running round to catch it before it falls.
Of course Red Man tried, but it was so heavy he could only just lift it above his head before
dropping it. The blow only ricked his neck - luckily the Scotsmans head was very hard. But
it was also full of good sense. He thanked Oonagh for her hospitality and said he would
wait no longer, but return to Scotland before the tide came in.
Finn leapt from the cradle, thanked Oonagh for her shrewdness, and chased Benandonner
out of Ireland. Passing Portadown, County Antrim, Finn scooped a huge clod of earth out of
the ground to fling at the retreating Scot. The hole filled up with water and became the
biggest Lough in Ireland Lough Neagh! The clod he flung missed its target and landed in
the middle of the Irish Sea it became The Isle of Man!!
And both giants tore up the Giants Causeway, just leaving the ragged ends at the two
shores! And if you go to the North coast of Ulster, or to Staffa, the nearest isle of Scotland,
you may visit them today the ends of the beautiful causeway that is, not the giants
those giants are long since in their graves!

Test Page (Images)

The first image I created, was very basic. I did a rotoscope of a simple cliff edge, I also added in
the sea, I used the distort tool on Photoshop to make it look like the waves are moving and not
stuck onto the image. I also added a basic sun. As you can see there is little detail in this image.
The second image adds a tree onto the cliff, the importance of that tree comes later on in the
fourth test image. The cliff has been given a gradient, to make the cliff look realistic and better
for the image. The sea has also been given a gradient to make it look like the sea gets darker,
shadows have also been added for the tree.
The third image adds a background gradient, adding more detail for the environment the scene is
set in. The gradient for the cliff has been changed to look darker, as the previous image looked
too light for the cliff. The sun has also been given a gradient so its not just yellow. An iconic 4
leaf clover has also been added because it represents the culture of Ireland.
The fourth image adds the character in, its a basic template I will use to change for later, this
basic character has been distorted to get the arms and legs in the right way for this scene. This is
when the tree is important as it shows the reader that the main character is a giant as hes
bigger than the trees. As well as the character, the speech bubbles have also been added in.

The fifth image has added, basic detail to the character, like
hair and eyes and his belt, and some shorts.
The sixth image adds more depth to the waves, to make the
sea look big and vast. Animals have been added into the
environment like a rabbit and a flock of birds. More details
have been added to my character, such as clothes and
somewhat proper hands.
The final images adds a different gradient background, so I
could achieve a more realistic sky. The tree also has added
detail with branches. This would be the image I use in the
book for page 1.

Test Page (Text Pages)

The first design of the text page was very simple, the only detail
being the text is center aligned and has a green colour text.
The second design adds a simple black and white border to the page,
I wanted the border to have a Celtic aspect in, as the location and
time fit around the Celtic period.
The third design adds a background colour of light blue to make the
green text easier to read for children. The Celtic border has been
filled in with green and black to add the the Celtic aspect of the
book.
The fourth design adds a green Celtic symbol to the bottom of the
text, this will appear on every page and it just adds a little more
depth to the page itself.

The fifth design, changes the font of the text , to make it more
bubbly and readable for the target audience. A drop shadow
was also added to the text, to give the text depth. The text
size has increased on the page, with spaces between the lines
decreasing. This will be the final design which will be used in
the Children's Book as Text Page 1.
