The Skeleton
General information
33 Vertebrae: 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral
(fused), 4 coccygeal (fused)
Vertebrae form a functional column
3 column theory (Denis): spine is divided into 3
columns
Anterior: ALL & anterior 23 of vertebral body/annulus
Middle: PLL & posterior 13 of vertebral body/annulus
Posterior: Pedicles, lamina, spinous process, and
ligaments
Spinal curves: normal curves Cervical lordosis
Thoracic kyphosis
Lumbar lordosis
Sacral kyphosis

Appendicular Skeleton
The primary function is movement
It includes bones of the upper and lower limbs
Girdles attach the limbs to the axial skeleton

Patella
Largest sesamoid bone in the body
Forms the patellofemoral joint
Fibula
The smaller, laterally placed bone of the leg
Non-weight bearing
The head forms the proximal tibiofibular joint
Lateral malleolus - distal end, articulates with
the tibia and the talus at the ankle
