policy of isolationism at the beginning of World War II. [1 pt] Despite the increasing
conflict in Europe, the U.S. knew that they had their own problems to deal with. [1 pt]
For example, the Republican party had a platform of isolationism largely due to the debt
from the New Deal and lingering effects of World War I (Doc 1). In addition, the
opposition party, the Democrats, advocated for isolationism as well, claiming that the
U.S. would not enter the war unless they were attacked (Doc 2).[ 2 pts.] Despite their
different political perspectives, the U.S. was justified in remaining isolationists, as
demonstrated by both political parties in 1940. [1 pt.]

Thesis Exemplar:
As Hitler gained power in Europe and sparked the
Second World War with his invasion of Poland, the
United States was faced with a tough decision. With
the outbreak of war in 1939, American politicians and
citizens agreed to a policy of isolationism, where they
would remain out of the conflict. As a result, America
was justified in attempting to remain out of the war
by the passing of the Neutrality Acts, preventing the
Merchants of Death from gaining profits again and
to simply defend themselves in the case of an attack.
