What are adjectives???

adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns


usually comes before the noun
convey a sense of which, what kind, or how many

Example :
Last summer I climbedthatmountain. (which)
I preferredapples. (what kind)
I wantsixoranges. (how many)

Functions of Adjectives :

to describe our feelings


to give nationality or origins
tell more about character of things
tell about age
tell about size and measurement
tell about colour
tell about material / what something is made of
tell about shape
express a judgment or opinion
tell about taste of foods

Example :
young, old, baby, babyish, teenage,
ancient, antique, old-fashioned,
youthful, elderly, mature, adolescent,
infantile, bygone, recent, modern

My coat is very old

Example :
glass, wooden, cloth, concrete,
fabric, cotton, plastic, leather,

to compare things
Example :
i) Sam is taller than his brother
ii) Sam is the tallest in the team

Forming comparative & superlative

er for the comparative

If the one-syllable adjective ends


with an e, * add
r
= comparative form
st = superlative form

If the one-syllable adjective ends


with a single consonant with a vowel
before it,
* double the consonant
* add
er for the comparative
est for the superlative
