Second Grade Mathematics

M.2.OA.3 determine whether a group of objects

(up to 20) has an odd or even number of
members, e.g. by pairing objects or counting
them by 2s and write an equation to express an
even number as a sum of two equal addends.
(CCSS Math.2.OA.3)

????Essential Question????

Can we incorporate music into our math lesson to

help us differ between even and odd numbers?

Lets Get Started

First we are going to watch a short math video about even

and odd numbers that will incorporate song to help us
remember the difference between the two types of
numbers.

Next. . .

We would let the students make 1 of 2 instruments. To save time today we have
prepared everyone an instrument. These instruments were made with very
cheap materials that are budget friendly ( for us low paid teachers) There are
maracas made from plastic spoons around a plastic egg filled with sand and
wrapped with tape. There are also homemade drums made from plastic cups
wrapped with plastic and a rubber band.

Your Turn
Everyone who has a maraca will shake their instrument
when they hear an even number.
Everyone who has a drum will hit their instrument when
they hear an odd number.
Ready? Lets go!

Lesson Plan
Age group: Second grade
Needed Materials: Computer/Internet (youtube.com), sand, plastic spoons, plastic wrap, rubber bands, tape, plastic
eggs, plastic cups, assessment worksheet
National Standards: Understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and
number systems
State Standards: M.2.OA.3 determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members,
e.g. by pairing objects or counting them by 2s and write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two
equal addends. (CCSS Math.2.OA.3)
Essential Question: Can we incorporate music into our math lesson to help us differ between even and odd numbers?
Objective: Work with Equal Groups of Objects to Gain Foundations for Multiplication. (Students will score at least
80% accuracy for this lesson.)
Procedures: The teacher will direct the students instruction by first showing a musical video that teaches students the
difference between even and off numbers. Next the students will make an instrument. They will then use the
instruments to differ between even and odd numbers by playing each instruments for different number types.
Assessment: Students will be assessed on participation in instrumental activity along with how well they do on the
odd and even worksheet.
Remediation: Depending on the percentage of student retention on content will depend on remediation. The teacher
may have to alter lesson due to students learning.
