Adjective and adverb

Upper intermediate

Three grades (degrees) of comparison:

1. Positive;
2. Comparative;

Many adjectives and all adverbs that contain two or more syllables
must use more and most to enhance their degree, and less and least to
decrease the degree.

(two-syllable) ADJ careful more careful most careful

less careful least careful
ADV often more often most often
less often least often

(three-syllable) ADJ serious more serious most serious

less serious least serious

Notice, there are compound adjectives:

well-known, strong-willed

ADV precisely more precisely most precisely

less precisely least precisely

(four-syllable) ADJ intelligent more intelligent most intelligent

less intelligent least intelligent
ADV successful more successfully most successfully
less successfully least successfully

Some adjectives that dont fit this rule are narrow, picky, silly, clever, friendly,
simple, quiet, and gentle.

dream a dream, from the musical Les Miserables. At the end of her performance she received a standing ovation
and all three judges voted for her to go through to the next round. Susan proved to be very popular with the public

millions of times. The actress Demi Moore said on Twitter that watching Susans performance made her teary.
The actress Amanda Holden, one of the judges on the show, has said that she thinks the reason why people love
Susan is because she just looks like anybody else who could live on your street. In interviews, Susan has said that
her ambition is to be like her favourite Singer, Elaine Paige.
Despite her popularity with the public and media coverage she received, she didnt win Britains Got Talent and in
the end she was beaten to second place by the dance group, Diversity.

Despite her fame, Susan has stayed true to her roots. She still lives in her modest family home with her cat Pebbles
