Number System

PREPARED BY. MA. CARMELA SAPALARAN

Number Types

Complex Numbers -real numbers, imaginary numbers, and sums and

differences of real and imaginary numbers (Ex. 2+3i, 2-3i)

Real Numbers includes Whole Numbers, Rational Numbers, and Irrational

Numbers. It can also be positive, negative or zero. It doesnt include imaginary
unit(i or j).
Note: Infinity is not a real number

Imaginary Numbers when a squared gives a negative result, (1) (Ex. i,

12.38i,-i, 3i/4, 0.01i, -i/2)
Note: In mathematics we usei(for imaginary) but in electronics they
"i" already means current, and the next letter after i is j).

usej(because

Irrational Numbers - a real number thatcannotbe written as a simple

fraction (Ex. pi=3.14159 = ?/? (No Ratio)

Note: Decimals with non-terminating values and non-repeating are irrational

numbers (3.3333445553345675)

Number Types

Rational Numbers - canbe written as aRatioof two integers. It

is a simple fraction (Ex. 1.5 can be written 3/2)

Note: Decimals with Non-terminating and repeating are rational

numbers
(Ex. 0.333333 is equal to 1/3)

Integer Number composed of zero, natural numbers, and the

negative of naturals (Ex. ,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,)

Whole Numbers - a natural number together with zero (Ex.

0,1,2,3,4,5,6,)

Natural Numbers - counting number (Ex. 1,2,3,4,5,6,)

Common Irrational Numbers

Piis a famous irrational number. People have calculated Pi to over a

quadrillion decimal places and still there is no pattern. The first few
digits look like this:
3.1415926535897932384626433832795 (and more ...)

Common Irrational Numbers

The numbere(Euler's Number) is another famous irrational

number. People have also calculatedeto lots of decimal places
without any pattern showing. The first few digits look like this:
2.7182818284590452353602874713527 (and more ...)

Common Irrational Numbers

TheGolden Ratiois an irrational number. The first few digits look

like this:
1.61803398874989484820... (and more ...)

Common Irrational Numbers

Many square roots, cube roots, etc are also irrational numbers. Examples:
3

1.7320508075688772935274463415
059 (etc)

9.9498743710661995473447982100
121 (etc)
But 4 = 2 (rational), and 9 = 3 (rational) ...
99

... sonot allroots are irrational.
