The Beginning
It all started in 1979 when John Lasseter left Disney and
joined a special-effects computer team at Lucasfilm Ltd.
In 1986, the computer graphic division was purchased by
Steve Jobs for 10 milion $ and became an independent co
mpany
named Pixar. At that ti
me pixar had about 45 employees.
They invented Pixar Image Computer but it never sold well .
There were threats that company will go out of business,
so they started to do com
mercials for outside comapnies.
They made 71 commercials, first of all was named Wake up
and it was mad
e for Tropicana.

In 1991 Pixar made 26$ million worth contract with Disney studios.
It was a 10-year 3-picture deal. A first m
ovie they worked on was
named Toy Story. It was a first fully-animated feature film

Working with Disney

After a huge sucess of Toy story in 1995, Pixar released another 3D movie na
med Bugs Life in 1998. It was No.1 in 6 international markets and made 36
2 million $ worldwide.

Disney and Pixar had disagreements after the production of Toy Story 2. Eve
ntually they continued working togetgher. Pixar was responsible for creation a
nd produciton, while Disney handled marketing and distribution. Profits were
split 50/50

In 2001 the number of employees reaches over 600. Monsters Inc. Makes ove
r 100$ million in 9 days faster than any other animated film in history

 In 2003 movie Finding Nemo was released .It was one of the best selling DVD
s worldwide. The number reached over 40 million copies.
In 2004 they animated The Incredibles and in 2006 The cars.
In year 2006 Disney bought Pixar for 7.4 billion $

*When Steve Jobs, chief executive officer of Apple Inc. and Pixar Animation Stui
os, and John Lasseter, then the executive vice president of Pixar, decided to m
ove their studios from a leased space in PointRichmond, California, to larger q
uarters of their own, they chose a 20-acre site in Emeryville, California,former
ly occupied by Del Monte Foods, Inc.
*The first of several buildings, a high-tech structure designed by Bohlin Cywins
ki Jackson, has special foundations and generators to ensure continued film pr
oduction, even through major earthquakes.
*The character of the building is intended to abstractly recall Emeryvilles industr
ial past.

Awards
The studio has earned fifteen Academy Awards, seven Golden Glo
be Awards, and eleven Grammy Awards, among many other award
s and acknowledgments. Most of Pixar's films have been nominate
d for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, since its ina
uguration in 2001, with seven winning; this includes Finding Nem
o and Toy Story 3, along with The Incredibles (2004),Ratatouille
(2007), WALL-E (2008), Up (2009), and Brave (2012). Monsters, I
nc. (2001) and Cars (2006) are the only two films that were nomin
ated for the award without winning it.

 Up and Toy Story 3 were also the second and third animated fil
ms to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, th
e first being Disney's Beauty and the Beast (1991). On Septemb
er 6, 2009, executives John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter, An
drew Stanton and Lee Unkrich were presented with the Golden
Lion for Lifetime Achievement by the biennial Venice Film Fest
ival. This award was presented by Lucasfilm founder George L
ucas.

Upcoming Projects

In April 2013, a sequel to Finding Nemo was announced. The film, titled Finding
Dory, will star Ellen DeGeneres reprising her role as Dory, and will be directed b
y Finding Nemo director, Andrew Stanton It is scheduled to be released on June 1
7, 2016.
Michael Wallis, the voice of Sheriff from the Cars franchise and a Route 66 consu
ltant for the first two films, said in an August 2013 interview that Pixar would ma
ke a third film in the series, which will go back to Route 66 and will also include
Route 99; a release date of June 2017 was announced later.

 In April 2012, Pixar announced their intention to create a film centered

on the Mexican holiday Da de los Muertos which is to be directed by
Lee Unkrich, In 2015 the film's title was announced, as Coco and a pla
nned release in November 2017.
In November 2014, it was announced that John Lasseter will direct Toy
Story 4.The planned release is for June 2018.
A sequel to The Incredibles was announced in March 2014, to be direct
ed by Brad Bird, with a release date in 2019.

* Well, we learned that this animation studio was truly a revolutionary one. They w
ere certainly a very amazing and entertaining company.
Animated films find themselves doubly-dismissed as for the kids and therefore
nothing to take too seriously. Pixar has shattered those expectations by producing
commercially successful cinematic art about the fishes in our fish tanks and the bu
gs in our backyards and many more.
*The relationship between humans and the non-human characters is critical to unde
rstanding Pixars movies. Through Pixar, we have opened ourselves to a better fut
