Windless, warm, the sky without a cloud. Only the blue was veiled with a haze of light
gold, as it is sometimes in early summer. (Page 1)

As for the roses, you could not help feeling they

understood. The green bushes bowed down as
though they had been visited by archangels. (Page 1)

He bent down, pinched a sprig of lavender, put his thumb & forefinger to his nose and
snuffed up the smell. (Page 2)

The house was alive with soft, quick steps and running voices. The green baize
door that led to the kitchen regions swung open and shut with a muffled thud.
And now there came a long, chuckling absurd sound. (Page 3)

Although the piano sounded more desperate than ever, her face broke into a
brilliant, dreadfully unsympathetic smile. (Page 5)

where the daisy plants had been seemed to shine. (Page 1)

There, quite by chance, the first thing she saw was this charming girl in the
mirror, in her black hat trimmed with gold daisies, and a long black velvet
ribbon. (Page 8)

Laura Sheridan

Mansfield presents Laura as an innocent and somewhat naive

young lady. During the story she is shown to find difficulties of her
family and her own understanding of social class. This is most
clearly seen when Laura finds out about the death of Scott, and
Laura is horrified and wants to call off the party. Laura Sheridan is
an idealistic and impressionable young person who struggles with
her own and her family's perceptions of class difference. Learning
that a working-class neighbor was accidentally killed, Laura wants
to cancel the garden party planned for that afternoon. This was an
impressing attitude from Laura which clearly reflects the
innocence within her. This is what I really like about her. The
narrative centers on Laura's feelings of empathy for the dead
laborer and class difference. Although She unsuccessfully tries to
convince her mother to cancel the party.

Jose Sheridan

Jose is Laura's class-conscious older sister. The writer described

the character who played a negetive role in the story. The
character dosent seem to be much sentimental to the poors or
anyone who is lower class. Much as she hates to show
sympathy she also provokes her younger sister. Jose told Laura
that she was being stupid and that no one would expect them
to cancel the garden party just because Mr. Scott died. So She
takes a dim view of Laura's wish to cancel the garden party.
