MEASUREMENT
The basic purpose of measurement in the
engineering industry is to determine whether
the component has been manufactured to
the requirements of a specification, usually
an engineering drawing.
The main types of measurements are
1. Measurement of length.
2. Measurement of angle.
3. Measurement of geometrical qualities
(form).

QUALITY
In industry quality product is one that
fulfills customers expectations. These
expectations or standard of performance
are based on the intended use and
selling price of the product.
Quality is currently the qualifier for
anyone to enter into the global markets

STATISTICAL QUALITY
CONTROL
No two things can be made exactly
alike. In mass-production, therefore,
no attempts are made to attain
absolute perfection but to control the
degree of variability so that parts lie
within the prescribed tolerances
Statistics acts as a practical tool in
this direction

STATISTICAL QUALITY
CONTROL
Statistics refers to the collection, organisation,
analysis, interpretation, and presentation of
data. Statistical quality control (SQC) involves
analysis of the characteristics of a production
output by inference from sampling the output.
The analysis, in turn, is used to make the
necessary corrections to ensure that no
defectives are produced and process remains
in control.

INSPECTION
Inspection is the critical examination of a
product /part to determine its degree of
conformance to applicable quality
standards or specification.
There are three stages in the inspection.
1.Incoming or receiving inspection
2.In process inspection.
3.Final inspection.

PRESS TOOL/MOULD
ELEMENTS
Standard elements. Eg: guide pillar,
guide bush, ejector pins, etc
Bought out items. Eg: screws, dowels,
hose connectors, etc.
In house manufactured items. Eg. die,
punch, core, cavity, and inserts

METHODS OF INSPECTION

Inspection by measurement
By using limit gauges
Optical comparators
Air gauges
Visual inspection
Metallurgical Inspection

ABC ANALYSIS
A class dimensions
All functional dimensions (0.01)
B class dimensions
All non-functional dimensions(0.1)
C class dimensions
Dimensions having wide tolerance in
(in general dim. With tolerance
(1mm)

BENEFITS OF ABC
ANALYSIS
After ABC analysis we can decide the few
critical dimensions which to be closely
controlled to get the desired functional
requirement.
What instruments should be used for
inspection of which dimensions.

INSTRUMENTS USED IN THE

INSPECTION OF PRESS TOOLS/MOULDS
Vernier Instruments
Micrometers
Electronic digital readout height
gauge (trimos-vertical)
Tool makers microscope
Profile projector

VERNIER INSTRUMENTS
Vernier Instruments
The principle of vernier is that
when two scales or divisions
slightly different in size are used,
the difference between them can
be utilised to enhance the
accuracy of measurement.

MICROMETER
The micrometer screw gauge essentially
consists of an accurate screw having
about
10 or 20 threads per cm and revolves in a
fixed nut. The end of the screw forms one
measuring tip and the other measuring
tip is constituted by a stationary anvil in
the base of the frame.

ELECTRONIC DIGITAL READOUT

HEIGHT GAUGE
A big advantage of the digital height
gauge is that it provides an
immediate
unambiguous digital readout of the
measurement value.
It is possible to hold this value in
memory and use as a datum for
further readings, or be compared
with given tolerances, etc

TRIMOS(VERTICAL)

TOOL MAKERS MICROSCOPE

The tool maker's microscope is based on the
principle of optics.
Light from the lamp at extreme right is
collimated in the tube connecting the lamp
to the centre of this instrument and is
reflected as parallel beam by the prism at
the end of the tube. On its way up this beam
collects the image of the object to be
inspected and this enters the microscope
being turned by another prism into the
inclined eyepiece.

PROFILE PROJECTOR
Fundamentally projection comparator (profile
projector) is a measuring instrument which
projects an enlarged shadow of the part
being measured on a screen, where it is
compared to a master drawing. By this
device, complicated shaped parts can be
easily checked.
In any projection system, there are four
essential elements, viz., source of light,
collimating or condensing lens, projection
lens and screen.

ADVANCES IN INSPECTION
As quality requirements are on the
rise, there is bound to be more
quality-related activities to be
performed in manufacture. However,
cost reduction is essential in
inspection and time taken for
inspection should be minimum.
inspection should be speeded up and
be integrated with manufacture to
reduce the time.

CMM
Optical and vision system inspection is
replacing conventional approaches in the
shop floor. CMMs are used directly in the
shop floor for inspection.
These machines have precise movements
in x-y-z coordinates which can be easily
controlled and measured. Each slide in
three directions is equipped with a
precision linear measurement transducer
which gives digital display and senses
+ve/-ve direction.
