Fonts and Colours

The font of my text in my magazine is important as it can be used

to send an intending message to my audience. For example, it
can be used to represent my genre of Rock with sharp and bold
font. Font can also be used to represent age. Futuristic, cartoony
text would appeal more to those of a younger audience. Some
font can also be used to appeal to a certain gender.
The colour of my text is also vitally important as it can be used to
effect by appealing to a certain audience. For example, colour
can represent gender as colours such as yellow and pink can be
associated with female, whereas blue and green are linked with a
male audience. Colour can also represent genre as for example
bold, sharp colours such as red, black and orange are connoted
with Rock.

COPPERPLATE GOTHIC BOLD

This font would be used for text which emphasis needs to be placed upon as it needs to stand out, for example mastheads/main coverlines.

This font is more suitable for coverlines, subtitles and perhaps main text. The font is sharp so it still stands out to a certain extent however its bolder alternative would be used more for mastheads/main coverlines.

COPPERPLATE GOTHIC LIGHT

Script
Fonts
This font is suitable for
wedding invitations,
diplomas or certificates NOT
rock magazines as its style
doesnt fir the genre
whatsoever as it is light and
elegant which is the opposite
of what Rock is connoted of.

DISPLAY
FONTS
Fonts such as Copper Std Black would be appropriate for my
magazine as it grabs the readers attention due to its fat, blocky style.
It is used for emphasis which would be needed on important titles
such as Mastheads and main coverlines.

Hand lettered
Fonts
Hand lettered fonts may be of use to me
while creating my magazine as it brings a
human element to the design which gives
the reader something to relate to. It could
be used effectively when writing the
editors notes in the magazine as it gives
an original feel to it.

BIG or

small

The size of my font indicates

importance, the bigger the font
the more significant it is. Big font
would be used on mastheads and
main coverlines whilst smaller font
may be used for captions.

COLOU
R

This colour is one

of trust, honesty
and loyalty. It is
sincere, reserved
and quiet, and
doesn't like to
make a fuss or
draw attention. It
hates
confrontation, and
likes to do things in
its own way.

During the creation of my magazine, Im going

to have to use different colours together in
order to create an effective colour scheme
which will make my magazine stand out to an
audience. Some colours work well together,
some do not. Looking at this colour wheel, a
primary colour and a complementary colour
combination is effective. I should attempt to use
theses colours together, however some colours
cannot be used for certain genres. For example,
colours such as pink, bright green and blue
would not be associated with a heavy metal
magazine. This is because different colours
have different meanings, as shown below.

The colour of
happiness, and
optimism, of
enlightenment
and creativity,
sunshine and
spring.

Green is the
colour of nature
and health. It
represents
growth, nature,
money, fertility
and safety.

Colours used Badly

Heavy Metal Magazine

SCREAM

If these fonts and colours were used for

a Heavy Metal it definitely wouldnt work
as they dont fit the genre whatsoever.
Colours like black, red and orange would
be more appropriate as there bold and
sharpness indicates fear which
associates with heavy metal. Colours
like pink and yellow are not appropriate
as there more female orientated colours
and indicate the opposite of fear. The
font is also inappropriate as it is curly
whereas for a heavy metal magazine
font needs to be sharper. Below are
some examples were fonts and colour
are used effectively for a heavy metal
rock magazine.

Colours used Effectively

Hip-Hop Magazine

smooth

The colours and fonts used here are

appropriate for a hip-hop magazine as its style
makes it seem cool and classy which connote
with the genre hip-hop. The writing is all in
lowercase intentionally as it portrays an
approachable and casual vibe, allowing
corporations to connect easier with their target
market. It can also help develop a brand
identity. This vibe created is associated with
hip-hop as it links with being cool and casual.
The colours used such as red, white and black
are common across many hip-hop magazines
as together they work effectively and look
stylish. The futuristic style of font is also used
effectively as the genres target audience is
teenagers so this style of font appeals to them.

Different colour
fonts I could use

White

Black
These font colours would be effective to fit my genre because these
colours are all sharp and bold which would appeal to my target
audience as these attributes connote with those of Rock and Roll.
Colours such as red, orange and black all instil fear and danger which
associates with the more heavy metal style. Whilst colours such as
black and white link with olden times and are usually found
combined in old-fashioned product. My genre is the old-school style
of rock so using these colours together would be appropriate. A
masthead of a rock and roll music magazine is symbolized by
standing out by being bold and sharp which grabs the readers
attention. The masthead itself would all be in capitals to ensure this
which also gives an old-school feel to it. This is why fonts such as
Rockwell Extra Bold or COPPERPLATE GOTHIC BOLD would be

Roll

I have decided to use the masthead Vintage as I believe it best describes

the type of genre of rock Im looking to produce. This ensures my target
audience is aware of the content of the magazine as the word vintage
portrays something as old-fashioned/old-school which is the sub-genre of
Rock Im targeting. It was a personal favourite of mine and after asking my
focus group of 5, the majority also agreed with me which helped back up
my decision. It is also catchy which is very important in creating a brand
identity along with using a consistent use of colours and font style.
Developing a brand identity is definitely something Im looking to create as
my magazine can then be easily remembered and will stay in peoples
