Storyboard Instructions

Day 1: Team Name

Create a team name and write it at the top of your storyboard.

Each time you learn a new concept, create a design or test a design
you will record it on your storyboard.

d: Heat
and
Temperat
ure

Add a definition for

heat and a definition
for temperature to your
storyboard.

Definitions: Heat
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy.
Atoms and molecules have kinetic energy, which create thermal
energy. The amount of thermal energy something has is the sum of
the kinetic energy of all of the particles. Thats why a bathtub of
water has more thermal energy than a sink of water when the water
is the same temperature.
Thermal energy can be transferred from one place to another when
there is a temperature difference.

Definitions: Temperature
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the
particles in a substance.
We call a high average kinetic energy hot and a low average kinetic
energy cold.

Add a definition and an

illustration for each
term below to your
storyboard:
Conduction
Convection
Radiation

Definitions: Conduction
Conduction is the way thermal energy transfers from one
substance to another by direct contact.
It can be between solids, or between a solid and a fluid.
Kinetic energy is transferred as the higher temperature atoms or
molecules vibrate and collide with cooler atoms or molecules,
warming them up and increasing their kinetic energy.

Definitions: Convection
Convection
occurs when fluids (gases or liquids) sink or rise because of
and Radiation

differences in density. Warmer fluids are less dense than colder ones,
because the particles in a warmer fluid are more spread out. Therefore,
cooler fluids sink (more dense) and warmer fluids rise (less dense).

Radiation is the transfer of energy in the form of electromagnetic

waves. Visible light and infrared light are both types of radiation that
transfer heat.

Conducto

Insulator
s

Add a definition and

three examples to
your storyboard for the
two terms below:
Heat Insulator
Heat Conductor

Definitions: Conductors
Heat
Insulator:
A material that reduces the rate of heat transfer.
and
Insulators

Thermal energy will move slowly through insulators.

Examples: Rubber, Plastic, Ceramic, Cotton, Wood, Air, Foam, Wool
Heat Conductor: A material that allows heat transfer to occur
quickly/easily.
Metals (Copper, Steel, Aluminum, Iron, Silver, Gold, Brass)

Can Demo Dilemma

You are going on a field trip and must
pack a lunch to take with you. You put a
can of cold soda in your lunch bag in the
morning, but when you opened your
lunch later that day the soda was warm!
What happened?

Storyboar
d: Can
Demo

1 - Rank the materials from

best to worst and record that
information on your storyboard.
(#1 being the best insulator)
2 - Also, draw a picture of a
soda can from this
demonstration and draw
arrows/label the direction of
heat transfer.
3 - Cut out your graph and add
it to your storyboard.

Storyboar
d: Initial
Igloo
dEsign

Draw and label the materials

used in your igloo design. For
each material, explain the
reason for including it in your
igloo.

Storyboar
d:
Test DAy
#1

Record the results of your test

on your storyboard, along with
the total cost of your first igloo
design.
*If your design changed from
your original picture, include a
drawing of what was actually
tested.

Storyboar
d:
REdesign

After brainstorming ideas with

your partner, draw your new
igloo design on your
storyboard. Include labels for
the materials, as well as
reasoning for why each
material was used.
*You will receive $50 to buy
additional supplies.

Storyboar
d: Final
Testing

Record the results from your

final test in your storyboard,
along with the cost of your final
design.

*If your design changed from

your redesign picture, include a
drawing of what was actually
tested.
