WHAT IS OKTOBERFEST?
Oktoberfest is the world's largestVolksfest(beer
festivalandtravelling funfair). Held annually
inMunich,Bavaria,Germany, it is a 16- to 18-dayfolk
festivalrunning from mid or late September to the first
weekend in October, with more than 6 million people from
around the world attending the event every year. Locally,
it is often called theWiesn, after the colloquial name for

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE

OKTOBERFEST
Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I, was married to
Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on 12th October 1810.
The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on
the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event.
The fields have been named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's fields") in
honor of the Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have
since abbreviated the name simply to the "Wies'n".
Horse races in the presence of the Royal Family marked the close of
the event that was celebrated as a festival for the whole of Bavaria.
The decision to repeat the horse races in the subsequent year gave
rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest.

The Oktoberfest continues in 1811

In 1811 an added feature to the horse races was the first Agricultural Show, designed to
boost Bavarian agriculture. The horse races, which were the oldest and - at one time the most popular event of the festival are no longer held today. But the Agricultural Show
is still held every three years during the Oktoberfest on the southern part of the festival
grounds.

In the first few decades the choice of amusements was sparse.

The first carousel and two swings were set up in 1818. Visitors were
able to quench their thirst at small beer stands which grew rapidly
in number. In 1896 the beer stands were replaced by the first beer
tents and halls set up by enterprising landlords with the backing of
the breweries.
The remainder of the festival site was taken up by a fun-fair. The
range of carousels etc. on offer was already increasing rapidly in the
1870s as the fairground trade continued to grow and develop in
Germany.

NO OKTOBERFEST ON WWI &

WWII

During the event, large quantities of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed:

during the 16-day festival in 2013, for example, 7.7 million litres were
served. Visitors also enjoy numerous attractions, such as amusement rides,
sidestalls and games. There is also a wide variety of traditional foods.

"Anstich" - Opening Ceremony

O'zapft is! (Its tapped!) - Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter traditionally

opens Munichs Oktoberfest with this cry...and then the beer can flow.
Every year at 12 midday, the Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter officially
opens the worlds largest carnival by tapping the keg in the
Schottenhamel tent. You might be wondering how many times Mayor
Dieter Reiter had to tap to open the first barrel of Oktoberfest beer
this year.

The183 th Munich Oktoberfestwas officially opened at

exactly12.00 middayon17th September 2016. Every year, the
first freshly tapped Ma of beer is given to the Minister President of
Bavaria, Horst Seehofer.

A gun salute is fired in the air to the Bavaria statue. This tradition
goes back many years and is a sign for the landlords in the other

Grand entry of the Oktoberfest landlords and

breweries

This is the official prelude to the opening of the Oktoberfest and involves about 1,000
participants, including the landlords' families in decorated carriages, the magnificent
horse-drawn drays of the Munich breweries, waitresses on decorated floats and all the
beer tent bands.

World-famous procession on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest. The

Costume und Riflemen's Procession gives an impressive insight into the
fascinating diversity of customs rooted in the heart of Bavaria, in
Franconia, Swabia, the states of Germany and in neighboring European
countries.

Open-Air Oktoberfest Music

A bigband open-air concert of all Oktoberfest bands with some 400

musicians takes place on the second Sunday of the festival.
