WHAT IS COMMUNICATION ?
Communication is the process of
sharing our ideas, thoughts, feelings
and values with other people and
having those ideas, thoughts, feelings
and values understood by the people
we are communicating with.

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION :

Formal Communication
Informal Communication

FORMAL COMMUNICATION :
Formal communication is written, oral
or graphic communication which
follows the lines of authority and
accountability.

FORMAL COMMUNICATION
CHANNELS FLOW IN THREE
DIRECTIONS:
Downward Communication
Upward Communication
Horizontal Communication

command or hierarchical
structure.
In other words, messages and
orders start at the upper levels of
the organizational hierarchy and
move down toward the bottom
levels. Responses to downward
communications move up along
the same path.

Upward Communicationis the


process of information flowing from
UPWARD
COMMUNICATION:
the lower levels of a hierarchy to
the upper levels. This type of
communicationis becoming more
and more popular in organizations
as traditional forms
ofcommunicationare becoming
less popular.

HORIZONTAL COMMUNICATION :
Horizontal Communication is
information exchange between
departments as means of
coordinating their activities. It
occurs across the same level.

It is systematic and orderly


ADVANTAGES
:

The source of
communication can be
easily located.
It provides support to
authority of supervisor over
subordinate.
There is a direct contact
among the managers and
the subordinates.

Disadvantages :
Overload of Work
Distortion of Information
Indifferent Officers

INFORMAL COMMUNICATION :
Informal Communication arising
out of all those channels of
communication that fall outside
the formal channels is known as
informal communication.

happening in the
organization.
It also facilitates to
ameliorate managerial
decisions.
