Risk-Based Design of

Offshore Structures

What is Risk
The Risk is the likelihood that the hazard
will cause harm and the severity of the
consequence.
Risk is a chance of loss of life.
This chance is measured by statistics.

Rule-Based Design

What is Risk-Based Design

(RBD)
Risk-Based Design (RBD) were introduced in the
maritime industry as a design paradigm
introducing safety in design as another objective.
Applications of risk-based approaches in the
maritime industry started in the early 1960s with
the introduction of the concept of probabilistic
ships damage stability.

What is Risk-Based Design

(RBD)
A new methodology integrating probabilistic / riskbased approaches in the design and approval
processes for ships.
Risk is used as measure to evaluate effectiveness
of design changes with respect to safety Risk-based
approval.

What is Risk-Based Design

(RBD)
Safety is one additional design objective along
traditional objectives such as speed and cargo
capacity .
Risk is used as measure to evaluate effectiveness
of design changes with respect to safety.
Risk-based approval is the process of approving
risk-based designed ships and their intended
operation.

Benefits of Using Risk-Based

Design
Reduced Overdesign.
More Cost Efficient Approach.
More Proactive Design Methodology.

The main motivation to use risk-based

approaches is twofold:
Implement a novel ship design which is
considered safe but for some formal
reason cannot be approved today .
Rationally optimize an existing design
with respect to safety, without
compromising on efficiency and
performance.
