Opening Statement
My name is Isaiah Weeden. I am a currently a freshman at the University of Rhode Island. I am from
Providence, RI and lived there since I was two. Growing up, I had great leaders in my life that helped
me to get to the point I am at now in life. On campus I have a job with the furniture removal crew and
the Rams Den. I chose to take the on the leadership minor because I know how important a leader
can be. I have seen things growing up where a leader or respectable neighborhood role model would
have made a great difference in some kids lives. I also am pursuing a major in communication,
hoping to find new and improved ways on trying to reach out to the masses of kids in my city. I plan to
do this through servant and relational leadership skills.

Self Leadership
Section 1
Outcome #1: Student will demonstrate autonomy and a minimized need for approval

I believe here is where I show a great deal of independence. I dont need anyone to stay behind
me so that I may get up and attend my classes and then still make it to work. I allow myself two
times to snooze my alarm clock so that the first two wake me up and the third alarm tells me to get
out of bed. I lean red this in URI101 through the campus life coaching they basically taught us. How
to prioritize and take authority of our schedules.
This to me meant that its time to grow up. That in the real world, no one will sit behind you and
take you through the process of life step by step. If you have an eight a.m, you shouldnt need any
one to wake you up, you should be able to get up and do it on your own. At my job on the rams den
I learned that quick. I noticed a lot of the workers always seeking approval, but they seem more or
less to annoy the managers. When I started working, I simply did my job to the best of my abilities
and they fell in love with my work ethic and even asked me to become a manager in training. That
went to show me, if you do you are supposed to do, your reward will be great.

Leadership Theories and Models

Section 2
Outcome #22:

Student will show knowledge of the Management by Objectives

theory of leadership by Drucker
In the furniture removal crew we have everything planned out for our entire shifts. When we come
in we set up the warehouse for the days incoming shipments, this plays into the strategic planning
aspect in Druckes outline of steps to being a good leader and running the show efficiently. We also
keep a code of ethics to work efficiently and safely and as quick as possible to get the most done.
This plays into Druckes aspect of having a code of ethics.
To me this meant that one must learn how to handle the task of being appointed something and
getting it done. Following a group or company rule, to follow their ethics, is what I took from this.
Where I implied this was at my job at the moving crew. It is in the companies ethics to always
report back to the warehouse on break or when you clock out, no matter where you are at on
campus. I at first didnt think it made any sense, but its just to make sure that while on the bosses
time you can be accounted for.

Inclusive Leadership / Diversity and its application to

leadership
Section 3
Outcome #82:

Student will describe personal examples of being a change agent

The moving crew was said to be a dull job at times. There are days where there can be a great
deal f work and people tend to get on each others nerves and tensions rise. Where I come in being a
social change agent is part of my values, having social awareness keeps me on my toes to keep the
atmosphere light and joyful.
At the moving crew we must move things all day and it can get hectic with everybody talking and
putting together different set up strategies for the warehouse and truck. I was told temperswould
flare and it could go on for weeks. But I used my strength of social awareness and I always try and
keep the peace. I have been able to keep laughter going and hard work going as well. We are now a
bunch of hard working happy guys.

Interpersonal and Organizational Concepts & Skills

Section 4
Outcome 101: Student will demonstrate knowledge of functions of group communication
by Hirokawa
Here I had to use one of my strengths which was adaptability. As a group we had to stay in
constant communication and be able to work around each others schedule. We also had to appoint
different roles to each person in the group. This is just like in the model of Hirokawa. The group
must be able to mend even through our differences. Everybody had something to offer put forth
towards our project.
In our group we always kept good contact with each other. We always had to stay in contact in
order anything went wrong with our plans. Where one person come through another did.

Interpersonal and Organizational Concepts & Skills

Section 5
Outcome 99: Student will demonstrate knowledge of active listening techniques
When I went to Lasalle Academy and was asked to speak to a few selected children from the
freshman class. While sitting in the office with them, I had to tap into my active listening skills. I
didnt only here the kids, I gave them my undivided mental state. As they spoke, I gathered their
statements and related them to situations of my own. I then gave the kids ways to better their
situation as much as they could, regarding schools and getting acclimate to the tougher
curriculum.
Here I rather enjoyed listening to the kids. They each shared similar backgrounds of where they
grew, what their social life was like, and their lives at home. I was able to only listen and give
honest feedback to them on how they could make their time at Lasalle more enjoyable.
