District Leaders & Implementation of

Internet Safety Strategies
Stakeholders consulted during this study:
Superintendent
Principal
Athletic Director
Teacher

How does the district determine which

websites are blocked?
According to our superintendent, sites are blocked through our A-site,
SPARCC. Sites are blocked based on a composite of other sites around
the state. We can override a proposed blocked site but rarely do. In
addition we can block at a local level. We rarely do this.

According to the district's Acceptable Use Policy, it is the responsibility

of the district to ensure that filtering software is in use.

How does this impact staff and students?

According to board policy, any computer owned by the district can be
accessed by the board at anytime.
Staff and students must have a signed Acceptable Use Policy on file
with the district. According to the AUP, A user who violates this
agreement shall, at a minimum, have his or her access to the network
and Internet terminated and is subject to disciplinary action by the
school administrator.

Cyberbullying...is it an issue in our district?

According to one principal in the district, we see very little
cyberbullying, at least those cases that are brought to our attention.
Most of the cyberbullying that does go on happens through social media
outlets.
Cyberbullying is the act with the intent to demean and/or the repetitive
and hostile behavior with the intent to harm others through the use of
information and communication technologies and other webbased/online sites are strictly prohibited (WEVSD AUP, 2016).

Cyberbullying...is it an issue in our district?

Cyberbullying includes, but is not limited to:
Posting slurs
Circulating gossip or rumors
Sending abusive or threatening email/text messages/instant
messages
Posting to websites embarrassing photographs or videos of students,
staff or other school employees
Sending sexually explicit photos/videos via text messages

Social Media and Athletics

Our districts athletic director was interviewed to see how internet
safety plays a part in the athletic department. Twitter is used to cover
all Windham Athletics.
There is a section in the Athletic Code of Conduct pertaining to social
media. Any violations may result in a loss of playing time, stated the
athletic director.

Student Internet Use...Home vs. School

A teacher was asked to comment on how students typically use the
internet at home versus how they use it at school.
He stated that Google Classroom is predominately used at school for
students to complete assignments. Internet-related homework is not
given in my class, therefore students are probably using the internet at
home more for social media and personal reasons.
