Research Question:
What are the similarities and differences between the
high school education system in Boston, USA, and
Beijing, CN. Focusing on Testing.
School days in China are typically much longer than they are in America. Whereas American students spend
around 7 hours in school on a weekday, students in China start their day at 7:00 a.m. and remain in school
until about 8:20 p.m. Seniors who are rigorously studying for their final exams sometimes stay at school until
10 at night.
Class structure also differs in China than in America - students stay in the same class with the same students
all day, and have their teachers come to them. Students form bonds with their one class, whereas in America,
we switch classes in middle and high school and intermingle with other students in the same grade
throughout the school day. Lunches during the school day also last longer than in the US, sometimes lasting
as long as 2 hours.
GaoKao
The Gaokao is a comprehensive exam that
covers all subjects in high school including
math, biology, chemistry, physics, Chinese,
English, history, geography, and political
science. Unlike the SAT, the Gaokao is the only
way to determine which college you go to. It
also helps you determine what major you will be
studying. The GaoKao is composed of multiple
choices, short arguments, essays, proofs, and
applied problem solving. The purpose of the
Gaokao is to limit the capacity for higher quality
education. The Gaokao test is full of traps and
tricks to purposely fail the students in order to
test their knowledge. It is designed to eliminate
students who have lower talent levels and as a
result, is very difficult and highly selective.
