Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi
Botticelli came from his older brother,
who was a pawn broker called Bottecello
(Little Barrel)
Born 1445 - Died May 17th, 1510

Starting Career
After completing his schooling, Sandro Botticelli was apprenticed to his
brother Antonio as a Goldsmith, but since Sandro desired to paint more, his
father then had him apprenticed toFilippo Lippi, one of Florences great
painting masters.

Mature Career

By 1470 Botticelli was established as a painting


master of his own, with his own workshop.
1478 1481 Botticelli is considered to enter his
artistic maturity, and many of his pieces were
rendered from text into conceptual
compositions.
Botticelli never married, and lived with his
family his whole life with his only focus being
his art.

Botticelli was also known for
his Secular work. While
many of his pieces didnt
survive, Botticelli was one of
a handful of painters
commissioned by the Medici
Family.

religious or religious matters.
The Medicis were the ruling
family at the time.

Mythological Paintings
It was customary at the
time for the grooms
family to prepare a
chamber in the family
home that was filled with
paintings. These works
typically depicted
romantic, exalting love
and lovers, or exemplary,
depicting heroines of
virtuous fame.
Botticelli created the trend
within this genre to use
mythologies and
storybook texts to inspire

Late Works

It is said that Botticelli became


influenced by a bold reformist
preacher named Girolamo
Savonarola in the 1490s.
Botticellis work notably
changed. His figures became
more slender, and their
gestures and expressions
seemed almost like a call to
action.
When Savonarola was
executed in 1498, Botticelli
held fast to his own beliefs in
the church renewal, and many

Conclusion:
Sometime after
1505, Botticelli
became ill, and
finally passed away
in 1510. Roughly 50
of his paintings
survive, and you
can see them today
at the Uffizi Gallery
in Florence, Italy.
