Definition
Energy
Energy is the capacity of a
physical system to perform
work.
Energy exists in several forms
such as heat, kinetic or
mechanical energy, light,
potential energy, electrical, or
other forms (Jones, 2014).
SI Unit of
Energy
The SI unit of energy is the
joule (J) or newton-meter
(N*m). The joule is also
the SI unit of work. (Jones,
2014).
Definition
Non-Renewable Energy
Non-renewable energy sources
are ones which do run out. The
three main non-renewable
energy sources, which are fast
running out, are: coal, oil and
natural gas (William, 2009).

Wind Farm
On October 31, 2014, the 150MW Burgos
windfarm project (BWP) of the Energy
Development Corp. (EDC) was successfully
commissioned to operate by the Department
of Energy (DOE). The EDC invested $450
million to develop the BWP now operated by
EDC Burgos Wind Power Corp.

-the largest wind farm in Southeast Asia
-expected to produce an estimated 233

What Causes
WIND
Pressure at the earth's
surface is a measure of the
'weight' of air pressing
down on it. The greater the
mass of air above us, the
higher the pressure we feel,
and vice-versa.
What Causes
WIND
The importance of this is
that air at the surface will
want to move from high to
low pressureto equalize
the difference, which is
what we know as wind.

The Gear Box
The Tower
Towers are mostly cylindrical,
made of steel, painted light grey,
and from 25 to 75 metres in
height.
Rotor Blades
Wind turbines can have from one to
three rotor blades, made of fibre glassreinforced polyester or wood-epoxy. The
blades are usually between 30 and 80
meters in diameter.
The longer the blades, the greater the
energy output. They rotate at 10-30
revolutions per minute at constant
speed, although an increasing number of
machines operate at a variable speed.
The blades can be rotated to change the
pitch angle and modify power output.
Yaw Mechanism
The yaw mechanism turns the turbine
to face the wind.
Gear Box
Most wind turbines have
gearboxes, although there
are increasing numbers with
direct drives. the gearbox
converts the low-speed
rotation of the drive shaft
(about 16 revolutions per
minute, rpm) into highspeed (1600 rpm) rotation
fast enough to drive the
generator efficiently.
