The healthcare industry is in the

midst of a transformative change.
It is undergoing reform through
initiatives that focus on improving
patient outcomes, tying provider
reimbursement to quality metrics
(rather than traditional fee for
services), adopting electronic
patient records, and developing
accountable care organizations.

Technological innovation
continues to grow, changing all
industries as it evolves. In
healthcare, technology is
increasingly playing a role in
almost all processes, from
patient registration to data
monitoring, from lab tests to
self-care tools.

2016 is shaping up to be one of

the biggest years for
healthcare technology ever,
with innovations in medical
devices, software, and changes
in how healthcare is
administered, both from a care
and financial perspective

The following are technological

advancements in healthcare that have
emerged over the last ten years.

The electronic health record

In 2009, only 16 percent of U.S. hospitals were using
an EHR. By 2013, about 80 percent of hospitals
eligible for CMS' meaningful use incentives program
had incorporated an EHR into their organizations.

mHealth
Mobile health is freeing healthcare devices of wires
and cords and enabling physicians and patients alike
to check on healthcare processes on-the-go.
Smartphones and tablets allow healthcare providers
to more freely access and send information.

Portal technology
Patients are increasingly becoming active players in
their own healthcare, and portal technology is one tool
helping them to do so. Portal technology allows
physicians and patients to access medical records and
interact online.
Remote monitoring tools
At the end of 2012, 2.8 million patients worldwide were
using a home monitoring system, Monitoring patients'
health at home can reduce costs and unnecessary visits
to a physician's office.

Self-service kiosks
Similar to portal technology, self-service kiosks can help
expedite processes like hospital registration. Automated
kiosks can assist patients with paying co-pays, checking
identification, signing paperwork and other registration
requirements.

Sensors and wearable technology

Wearable medical devices and sensors are simply another
way to collect data, sensors and wearable technology
could be as simple as an alert sent to a care provider when
a patient falls down or a bandage that can detect skin pH
levels to tell if a cut is getting infected.

Pharmacogenomics/genome
sequencing
Pharmacogenomics anticipating the onset
of certain diseases offers promising
benefits for healthcare efficiency and
diagnostic accuracy.

The Biggest Innovations in

Healthcare Technology in 2017

Nanobots in
Blood

The Function :
1. Like white blood cells
2. Destroy bacteria and other
pathogens.
3. Would function like their fullsize equivalents with their
own sensors,
4. propulsion systems
5. could perform small tasks
like delivering chemotherapy
1000 times

Head Transplants
and Mind Transfer
Within a few decades, a
supercomputer might be
able to simulate a human
brain at neural level at
faster perceived speed
than a biological brain.
Dr. Sergio
Canaverobelieves that
its now possible to slice
the head of off one
person and he says
thefirst head transplant
operation could come.

Robotic Flight
Simulator Surgery
RoSS (Robotic
Surgery Simulator) is
changing the way
surgeons hone their
craft.

Holographic
Images
A holographic
data input likea
keyboard or
mouse may help
reduce the
amount of
infections people
are exposed to.

Mitochondrial
DNA Transfer
Alternatively known as a
three parent baby this
process helps eliminate a
variety of potentially fatal
diseases like heart and liver
failure, and deafness.
Mitochondrial DNA Transferis
when two parents contribute
normally to an in vitro
fertilization and a third-party
contributes the mitochondrial
DNA.

Conclusion: Movement to Embrace

Technology by Health Systems
The movement has begun with most health
systems such as Ascension Health, Dignity
Health, Stanford and others investing into
startups, albeit very slowly. Many health systems
are just now beginning to build their own
innovation centers, but have not yet built the
framework on how to judge their performance
and key metrics.
