Problem Statement
Does implementing a single source of engagement
(digital) have a direct impact on attitudes on reading
while increasing reading scores? Not in many districts
do students have the ability to have a 1 on 1 computer
program where they are allowed to take home the
computer/tablets. We have an excellent education
opportunity for all students to become proficient and
comfortable operating a computer an invaluable skill
in the 21st century.

Professional Goals
My professional goal for this implementation is become more proficient in using
the Microsoft Office programs while injecting online resources to better develop
21st century skills and learning strategies for students. I would also like to utilize
Edublogs for digital communication and expression for all students.

Student Goals
The students goals is to increase overall reading scores while using programs
that they readily have at their disposal. The other goal is for students to be able
to learn in a classroom that uses technology that is relevant in todays
workplace.

Professional Outcomes

1. Success Criterion: Ensure that students are provided with technology that
is relevant to 21st century learning.

Planned Artifact: Students will have tablets/computers with Microsoft Office

software and will be able to utilize in the classroom and outside the
classroom for assignments.

2. Success Criterion: Provide students with ability to be published through

blogging.

Planned Artifact: Students will use Edublogs to write updates on board

questions from weekly readings.

Learner Outcomes

1. Success Criterion: Increase student reading comprehension through digital

down book.

Planned Artifact: Students will read a complete book through digital media
and right a five paragraph essay using Microsoft Office program Word.

2. Success Criterion: Students will create presentation in conjunction with

essay.

Planned Artifact: Students will PowerPoint to create a presentation where

they will share through not only words but through visual aids on the book
they read.

Timeline

Week 1:

Will be an introduction to programs used to interact with teacher and

students. It will also include the introduction to blogging. Having the
technology in the classroom is not enough for students. They must know how
to use in a manner that will help them increase knowledge management while
increasing core fundamentals. Students will also take a reading
comprehension test to establish base line reading data.

Week 2

Students will focus on reading a selected title from a digital library. The
students will type a one page essay on Word focusing on establishing a wellstructured essay that includes the main points of the story. Students will also
be contributing to a discussing question about the story.

Timeline

Week 3

Students will create a slide show using PowerPoint to establish a picture guide
to go along with their essay. The guide will require students to explore using
search engines, editing of photos, and bringing it together for a presentation.

Week 4

Students will retake reading comprehension exam to evaluate levels of

improvement. While the focus of the action research is reading
comprehension it will cross interdisciplinary studies. It is meant to reach out
past a classroom and expand the learning environment of the students. The
students will be able to present both essay and presentation in a cumulating
event.

Interviews Feedback

6th Grade Teacher

Introducing additional software requirements will require additional time to

learn for both students and teachers. We are already on a tight schedule to fit
in all our required units.

Curriculum Coach

This type of implementation will work well for a technology course; it will be
hard to implement in a core classroom. I would need more data on other
successful implementations before I would recommend a change to curriculum

Assistant Principal

I like the idea of crossing interdisciplinary areas in the classroom; since the
laptops are already available to students. We need to explore the possibility to
expanding how integrate technology to other courses other than computer and
technology course.

Language Arts Teacher

This is a great way to get students excited about reading; since most students
spend a large amount of time on their electronics already. The need to
capitalize on what they are doing is key.

Conclusion
As educators we are responsible to ensure that all students are being taught to
their potential. Some districts have the opportunity to provide students with a
great opportunity to learn the latest technology. When we are provided with the
resources we must use them to their full operational capability. Having the
computers in the classroom is only useful if the students are not being pushed to
explore and use them for other than searching their favorite YouTube video.
Instructors must also have the necessary skill set to coach, teach, and mentor
the students through their classrooms. We often forget how important our role is
in not only increasing knowledge within the students but also preparing them as
much as possible to enter the work force after school. Not students will be
attending college and we must prepare them if they choose to immediately enter
the work force.
