Definition of Culvert
Culvert is a drainage hole or pipe that enable water

(irrigation or discharge) to drain under roads,

railways, roads or other construction
Culverts are also used as a small bridge, to drain a
small river or part of a drainage or street gutter

Type of Culvert
1. Steel Culvert
Culvert steel normally using Corrugated Steel
Pipe
.Advantages :
a. Cheap
b. Quickly execution
c. Easy installation, don't need a special
experts
d. Have a long life time (up to 25 years)
e. Easy to carriage
f. Can be moved from one point to another
point if culvert not used.

2. PVC Culvert

Culvert PVC normally used for a small culvert. At low place

and water distribution from gutter to be made culvert suitable
with gutter size.

3. Concrete Culvert

Concrete culvert (culvert box) is a culvert cast at the factory

(precast) or casted in place, for dimensions depending on water
discharge will be streamed through the culvert. Culvert were
casted in the factory can complete with round, square and
trapezoid profile, or a separate up and down modular.

4. Box Culvert

Box Culvert is a rectangular pre-press reinforced concrete

which has spigot and socket. The function of spigot and socket
are to make box culvert impermeable with groundwater and
keep them together if landslide occur. Box culvert usually used
as a drainage channel. Large size of box culvert can be used as
a bridge.

5. Arch Culvert

Arch Culvert is a integration between structural strength and

aesthetics (beauty). Arch Culvert also an alternative choices
for culverts form or replace conventional bridge structure.

Function and Application of Culvert

1. Drain water from side to another side of road

2. As a part of road or bridge planning.

3. Telephone cable channel, electricity or clean water

Maintenance Measures of Culvert

1. Culvert must be function properly for drain water
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

across the road

Maintain and clean the culvert
Culvert should not be absorbed in sediment
Clean the receiver pool
Push the sediment with bamboo
Clean the waster pool for flowing good and smoothly
water

Calculation of Channel and Culvert Dimension

Channel and culvert dimension are determined by Fe = Fd
1. Wet cros-sectional area based on discharge flow (Fd)
Fd= Q/ v (m2)

2. The most economic wet cross-sectional area (Fe)

Rectangular channel

Culvert

Fe = b d
requirement : b = 2 d
R=d/2
Explanation :
Fe
= Economic sectional area of wet (m2)
B
= width of channel (m)
d
= water depth (m)
R
= hydraulic radius (m)

Fe = 0,685D2
requirement : d = 0,8D
P=2r
R = A/ P
D
r
A
P

= diameter of culvert (m)

= radius of culvert (m)
= cross-sectional area (m2)
= wetted perimeter (m)

Calculation of Channel and Culvert Dimension

3. Free board (w) for rectangular channel
w = (0,5d )0,5
4. Slope
I = (v.n R2/3)2
Explanation:
I
v
n

= slope of channel
= flow velocity (m/s)
= manning roughness coefficient , ( masonry ) = 0,025
