Task 9: Proposal

The title I wish to use for my indie rock music magazine is

Reverb. I have chosen the genre of indie rock as it is the most
popular genre among my target audience, it is also my own
personal favourite genre, therefore with the knowledge I
possess towards indie rock, I have a greater understanding of
the conventions which need to be recreated. The name Reverb
relates to the genre of indie rock as it is a musical effect which
is often used within the production of this genre of music.
Reverb connotes tranquillity yet intensity, which are two
elements that I want to achieve and portray with my magazine.

Initial ideas... (masthead and front cover)

These exampled fonts express the kind of style(s)

that I am initially aiming to achieve with and for
my masthead. I want the masthead to be large,
capitalised and bold, in order to gain the attention
of the audience, striking out to and drawing them
in (to read the magazine).

The examples of front covers shown above each present a main image which I may
potentially try to recreate in one way or another with my magazine. My models will be
presented as a group with close relationships, similarly to the first and somewhat second
image. Alike the third, I want the main image of my double page spread to consist of a
low shot of my model band playing their instruments; showing that they are a strong,
female force to be reckoned with.

Initial ideas... (contents page and double page spread)

I would like my contents page to be
presented in a way which links to the front
cover with regards to content, colour
schemes, and fonts; expressing a sense of
consistency and professionalism, which
would appeal to the audience. Within it, I
will include images of some feature artists
(main article image the largest), captioned
with a brief content description and page
number(s). A contents page title and
masthead will be presented at the top,
along with the magazine issue (date).
For my double page spread, the subject of the interview will
be the band which has featured in the main image of the front
cover and also the contents page. The format of the article will
be an informal interview, as this option was more popular
among my audience when asked in my questionnaire. The
main image will be carried out across two pages, where my
models are holding and posing with their given instruments.
For my representation, I want to reveal the band members as
friends, therefore they will have to pose in a way which infers
their relationship(s). My band will consist of 3 female
members, conveying the female target audience which I want
to achieve with my magazine.
A headline and tag line will be included, each presented in a
way which does not interfere with the main focuses of the
images; this also goes for the text. The band within the article
will be represented as a new indie band, therefore I will be
asking questions and reporting on content relevant to their
experiences and position in the music industry.

Q Magazine
presents strong
examples of
contents pages,
ones which I
would like my
own to resemble.

This Q Magazine article with Liam Gallagher is

again presented in a way which I would like to
somewhat follow for my double page spread.

Initial ideas... (main images)

For the main image in my double page spread, I would like
to present a female band similar to the one shown on the
left- posing with the instruments (i.e. Guitar, drums) whilst
sporting indie style looks. However dissimilar to this image,
I want my band front facing the camera with at least the
front-woman giving direct address. Clearly the image will
differ as the one exampled is taken during a live set, rather
than an organised photo shoot.

The direct address and posing within this image is more

similar to what I want to achieve with my main image.
There is a clear consistent style and element of
togetherness shown about the band; though obviously the
gender of the band will differ. The instruments will infer
the sound which the band creates, showing that they are
their own musicians and have raw production as opposed
to non-individual pop music for example.
