Introduction:
:Police have always protected the citizens and one of

those protectors was Commandant Frontier

Constabulary Safwat Ghayur. Safwat Ghayur was a
scion of Peshawars Nishtar family. Somebody
remarked that two individuals of this family have
entered the pantheon of heroes, Sardar Abdur Rab
Nishtar and Safwat Ghayoor.

 He was a brave police officer and a leader in the

countrys fight against terrorism. He was recognized

as a hero because he had been actively involved in
police operations and was shot in the shoulder in
1997 in a shootout with a criminal.

Safwat Ghayur

Early years:

Born on 14 July 1959.

Born in Karachi.
Belonging to kakar tribe of Pashtuns from zhob,

Balochistan.
Was the son of Abdur Ghayoor, Pakistani
ambassador to Thailand.

Spent his adolescence in Thailand.

He was a badminton player and could be frequently

seen on the badminton courts of Royal Bangkok

His best friend was Homayoun Sadigh Esfandiary,
who was the son of Iranian ambassador to Thailand.

Family Background:

Son of Sardar Abdur Ghayoor, who was a diplomat

and held ambassadorial assignments in several

countries.
Nephew of Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar, the stalwart of
the Pakistan movement.
Cousin of former Governor of KP, Owais Ahmad
Ghani.

Cousin of former chief of armed forces General

Abdur Waheed Kakar.

Brother in law of former chief minister of Kpk and
federal interior minister of Pakistan, Aftab Ahmad
Khan Sherpao.

Education and Police services of Pakistan:

Did his elementary education abroad.

Safwat Ghayur did his Bachelors of Arts from

Edwards College, Peshawar.

Studied Masters in Political Science from University
of Peshawar.
Joined police services of Pakistan in 1981.

worked initially as an Assistant Superintendent of

Police (ASP), at various stations of Peshawar.

then as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of
Peshawar.
later on he held the posts of Deputy Commandant in
the National Police Academy of Pakistan, Assistant
IG CID, CCPO of Peshawar, IG Northern areas and
Commandant Frontier Constabulary.

Operations

Dreaded by criminal gangs operating from beyond

the administrative border.

Scored signal successes in operations all around
Peshawar.
Campaigns if Peshawar FR, Dara Adamkhel, Kala
Dhaka are only a few among list of outstanding
achievements against terrorists and law breakers.

Assassination

He was assassinated in a bomb blast outside his

office in the Frontier Constabulary chowk on the

evening of 4th August 2010. Responsibility was
claimed by Tehreek I Taliban Pakistan. He left
behind a young widow and two minor children, a
daughter and a son.

His loss was yet another blow to the Khyber-

Pakhtunkhwa Police; following his colleagues Malik

Saad and Abid Ali in keeping the tradition of selfsacrifice for the greater good of the community
going.

Awards and Tributes

He was honoured with Nishan e Shujaat in 2010.

Also his brother in law Ejaz Rahim writes in his book, A

Tribute to Safwat Ghayoor,

I have seen him stand up to the most powerful in
defence of those he considered innocent or wronged. In
the period of diminishing idealism and waning morale
in the domain of public service, he remained a shining
example of character, commitment and courage. In his
lifetime he loomed larger than life. His martyrdom
turned him into a legend

Poem:
One of the most scintillating poems in the book is
titled A Conversation with Safwat Ghayur.
The poet, benefiting from his close relationship with
the martyred police officer, has produced the best in
verse from what the two must have talked about
umpteen times.

I am a policeman, Sir,
My job is to risk everything
For the sake of others
I am supposed to lead men
Into the jaws of danger
Such leadership demands
Both courage and character
Do you then propose that

I dispense with them?

And when the poet advised him thus:
Prudence, prudence I advised
Courage, Courage he replied
Prudence makes sense
But not in times
When the sole choice
Is between courage and cowardice.
