MAKING READING

MATERIALS USING
PHOTOSHOP

Purpose

To create beginning reading materials


using Adobe Photoshop for tarpaulin
printing

You will need

A computer with Adobe Photoshop installed


A copy of the story
A picture for the story

Expected output

4 x 3 ft.
design

Procedure

Opening Photoshop

Double-click the
icon on the
desktop.

Or click Start > All


Programs >
Adobe > Adobe
Photoshop

Creating a new file

Select File Menu > New.

Fill-in the Name.

4ft x 3ft converted to


inches

Click
OK
when
done.

Canvass
Tools Panel
Layers Panel

Select Paint Bucket Tool from the Tools


to fill the background with color.

Change the background color by


clicking the Set Background Color.

Select a color.

Click on the canvass to apply the selected color.

Undo changes

Select Edit > Undo or Step Backward.


Or press Ctrl+Alt+Z

Inserting Text

Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T).

Set Font Family to Berlin Sans FB.

Set Font Size to 200pts.

Position your mouse cursor to a space where you


want to type the title of the selection.
Type the text.
Click the Move Tool to apply the changes.

Repeat procedure in inserting text.


Set Font Size to 100pts.

Inserting a picture.

Select the File


Menu > Open.

Locate the
picture and click
Open.

Select the picture by using the Select Marque


Tool or just press CTRL+A on the keyboard.

Copy the picture by selecting Edit Menu > Copy


or simply press Ctrl+C on the keyboard.

Click the tab with title The Cat and . to go


back to your current layout.

Paste the picture by selecting Edit menu > Paste. Or press Ctrl+V
on the keyboard.
Resize the picture by clicking and dragging on the outline or
corners of the picture.
Press the Enter key to apply the changes.

Remove the white


background on the
picture by selecting the
Magic Eraser Tool.
Click on the white
areas to erase.

Saving the layout

Select File Menu >


Save.
Choose a location
where you want to
save the file.
Default File Format
is Photoshop for an
editable file.
Click Save.

Saving the layout for printing

Select File Menu


> Save as.
Choose a
location where
you want to save
the file. Select a
File Format of
JPEG.
Click Save.

On the JPEG Option window, click OK to continue.


Layout saved using this format is not editable.

Closing Photoshop

Select File >


Close.
Be sure to save
changes before
closing.

Exiting Photoshop

Select File Menu > Exit.
