SCHOOL

INITIATED INTERVENTION

What

is SII?

It is one of the strategic components of the Drop

Out Reduction Program (DORP).
It is an intervention developed by the school itself
to address specific dropout problems.

What

are its goals and

objectives?

the holding power of the school;

Strengthen school and family partnership in order to
reduce student drop out rate;
Improve school, family and community partnership
through shared decision-making;
Improve achievement of the basic learning process; and
Increase students capabilities for independent selfmanaged learning.

What

are the guiding

principles of SII?
Intervention/s

is /are designed and developed

collaboratively;
It should benefit from existing approaches, materials
and experiences of literacy research, teaches,
managers and parents;
It should embrace the essential values of selfdetermination, self-respect and human rights; and
It should observe the basic principles of learning and
human development.

Innovative- better than existing practices

Affordable in terms of time, materials, technical,
and manpower resources

management requirements
Transferable- it can be benchmarked, materials are
portable and/or easy to produce
Student profile-based or information-based
Validated by the practitioners themselves

How

are SIIs developed?

- it must be based on the insightful analysis of the

problems identified in the SIP and the school DORP
plan relative to the high incidence of drop outs and
low retention rate in the catchment areas of a
school.

The

causal factors must be looked into:

1.student/learners- poor academic performance, poor
health, use of prohibited drugs, etc.
2. family- low income, lack of parental guidance,
domestic problems, etc.
3.community- presence of unwholesome recreational
facilities, drug addiction and excessive alcohol drinking,
etc.
4.school- teaching methods and approaches that do
not meet students expectation, etc

What are the elements of SII?

1. Situationer discuss briefly the problem/s and their causes
2. Objectives what the SII intends to achieve in a given
period
3. Implementation plan the approaches, activities, time
frame, materials and the person responsible in implementing
the SII
4. Management Structure the personnel, positions with their
TORs
5. Monitoring and evaluation plan how the SII shall be
assessed to determine whether the objectives are achieved

WHAT Steps are undertakento implement SIIs?

1. Conduct a meeting with the KEY
stakeholders- the SARDO, parents, DORP
team and other concerned parties.
2. Prepare all the materials and
facilities needed.
3. Implement the intervention in collaboration with the key
stakeholders
4. Track the progress of the implementation and the SARDO.
5. Make adjustment when necessary.
6.Evaluate the performance of the SARDO and the
implementation of the SII.
7. Utilize evaluation results to improve the intervention.

Concluding Statement
The SII as a DORP component is not only for
reducing school dropouts but also for the
empowerment of the school community: it
actualizes creative potentials of stakeholders,
mobilizes them for collective actions, hones
their problem-solving skills and makes everyone
responsible for making the school kind and
friendly to the learners.
