Accent rules

Reglas de los
acentos

Slabas
All words contain units of speech sounds
called syllables.
lu-nes has 2 syllables
do-min-go has 3 syllables
All words are emphasized/stressed in certain
syllables. Se llama acento tnico. It's the
loudest syllable in a word.

Rule #1
In Spanish words that end in a vowel
(a,e,i,o,u) n or s are stressed in the
penultimate (second to last) syllable.
i.e.
lu-nes, mar-tes, do-min-go
When words break this rule, we punish
them with a written accent on the stressed
syllable.
Se conoce como acento escrito, o la tilde.
