Week 7: Fractions and Division

Warm Up:
Count in 1/8s along a number line

Look for equivalent fractions

Count using the simplest possible fractions:
1/8, , 3/8,

Activity:
Display a blank 100 square.
What fraction of the big square is 1 little
square? How can we write this? Another
way?
Shade the top row. What fraction is shaded?
What fraction is this equivalent to? How can
we write this as a decimal fraction?
Shade 5/10. How can we write this? How
many 1/100s is this equivalent to? Any
other fraction?

Activity:
Shade 2/10. Write on your w/bs lots of ways
of writing this fraction.
Shade 25 squares so they form a 5 by 5
square in one corner of the large square.
What fraction is shaded? How else can this
be written?
Work out the decimal equivalent of .
See plan and open up the ITP
ITP Fractions

Main Activity:
You will receive a 0 to 1 line marked in steps
of 0.1
You need to mark on halves, quarters, fifths,
tenths and eighths, and the equivalent
decimals, simplifying fractions where you
can.

Main Activity:
If finished, in pairs one of you cover parts of
your number line so your friend cant see.
Can your partner correctly identify which
piece of information is being covered- both
the fraction and the decimal?

Warm Up:
Place 5-digit nos on a human number
line
Two chn to write 0 and 100,000 on w/bs and
hold at either end of the front of the
classroom.
Secretly give a child a number. Stand
roughly where you think this number lies
between 0 and 100,000.
Someone in the class to suggest a number.

Warm Up:
Place 5-digit nos on a human number
line
The child says whether the mystery number
is more or less.
Now we are going to zoom in on the line by
changing the end numbers
The child stands at roughly the right place
between them.
Take another guess from the class.
Keep going until correct

Activity:
A hotel is preparing for a wedding. There are
143 guests who will sit at tables of eight,
how many tables are needed?

Discuss in pairs what calculation is needed

and work together on your whiteboards to
solve it.

Activity:
Discuss the calculation required.
Model both vertical layout and short division
Is this answer a problem?
How many tables are needed?
Did we need to round the answer up or
down?

Activity:
What if 12 sat round a table?

Lets use both the vertical layout and short

division so that you can see how the same
methods work for division by 12.
