Are separate items that can be counted.

Are are the ones ones we can not count.


Are abstract ideas ("happiness"), nouns which
represent a whole group of similar items
("furniture"), weather terms ("rain"), and
substances ("salt").
For example, we cannot count "milk". We can
count "bottles of milk" or "liters of milk", but we
cannot count "milk" itself.

Uncountable nouns have no plural


form. We use a singular verb.
Examples:
This news is very important.
Your luggage looks heavy.

We do not usually use the indefinite article a/an


with uncountable nouns.
We cannot say "an information" or "a music". But we can
say:
a piece of news
a bottle of water
a grain of rice

NOUNS

Many nouns can be both countable and uncountable, but with


different meanings.

Examples:
A PAPER = a piece of writing on a particular subject written by
an expert and usually published in a book or journal COUNTABLE
PAPER = thin flat material which is made from crushed wood or
cloth and is used for writing, printing or drawing on UNCOUNTABLE

Many nouns can be both countable and


uncountable, but with different meanings.

Examples:
A HAIR = any of the thin thread-like
structures that grow out of the head or of the
skin of a person or animal COUNTABLE
HAIR = the mass of thin thread-like structures
on the head of a person UNCOUNTABLE
