We need your help promoting this new course!

Why do we need ENGL-099?
National shift in developmental philosophy away from
correcting/remediating deficiency to added scaffolding for college-
level work (modeling, conferencing, guided process)
Part of this shift is current national trend to combine
developmental reading and writing courses into single academic
literacy course.
Potential win-win: both an institutional and pedagogical rationale
Institutional Rationale = completion agenda: streamline
developmental sequence and eliminate exit points in the pipeline
Pedagogical Rationale = emphasis on critical thinking and
metacognition, whole-language learning, not skills and deficiencies
ENGL-099 Course Description
ENGL 099 provides holistic instruction in reading,
writing and critical thinking as required for
college level courses.
Students will learn to apply critical reading and rhetorical writing
strategies
Students will learn to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize academic
texts.
Students will be required to respond critically to informative,
persuasive and narrative texts through dialogue, projects,
extended responses, and a recursive essay writing process.
