Introduction
Part 1 - Population
A population is a summation of all the organisms of the same group or species, which live in a
particular geographical area, and have the capability of interbreeding. Current world population
according to Population Reference Bureau is 7.4 Billion.

Part 2 - Economic Crisis [Recession and Depression (economics)]

Negative GDP growth lasting two or more quarters is called a recession. An especially prolonged
or severe recession may be called a depression, while a long period of slow but not necessarily
negative growth is sometimes called economic stagnation.

Part 1 - Global Poverty

Poverty is general scarcity, famine, or the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material
possessions or money. It includes social, economic, and political elements. Poverty may be
defined as either absolute or relative.
Absolute poverty refers to the lack of means necessary to meet basic needs such as food,
clothing and shelter.
Relative poverty takes into consideration individual social and economic status compared to the
rest of society. 2

Will controlling population solve economic
crisis and global poverty?

- One simple strategy that will help to address all these problems: provide universal access
to voluntary family planning and reproductive health services. (The Population Institute)
- Over 100 million women in the world today who want to space or limit their pregnancies,
but who lack knowledge of, or access to, modern methods of contraception. By educating
and empowering women, and giving them access to family planning services, we can save
lives, strengthen families, fight poverty, preserve the environment, and help achieve a
world population that can live in harmony with the planet. (The Population Institute)
