Most of Artificial Intelligence will
eventually lead to robotics.robotics. Most neural
networking, natural language processing, image
recognition, speech recognition/synthesis
research aims at eventually incorporating their
technology into the epitome of robotics - the
creation of a fully humanoid robot.
robot.
The field of robotics has been around nearly
as long as Artificial Intelligence - but the field has
made little progress. This is only natural, since the
field not only attempts to conquer intelligence, but
also the body that embodies it - a formidable task
indeed! Robotics, though, is not just about
humanoid robots; but also about their commercial
applications in manufacturing, safety and hundreds
of other fields.

Though robots are being talked of
since very long, real beginning was in 1954
when a programmed articulated transfer device
was develop. In 1962, the general motors
installed its first robot when real development
work started. Thus period of 1954 to 1962 is
considered as infancy for robots and period
from 1962 to 1976 as the period of
development, in 1968 an intelligence robot,
shaky, was built and in 1973 a commercially
available robots was produced. Today·s there
is a lot of interest in this field and a
separate branch of technology ¶robotics· has
emerged.

Robot can be defined as a programmable
multifunction manipulator designed to move
materials, parts, tools or specialised devise
through variable programmed motion for the
performance of a variety of task. According
to the oxford dictionary a robot is an
´apparently human automaton, intelligent
and obedient but impersonal machine.µ

There are many interesting robot projects.
The major robot projects are in progress

REASONS FOR USING ROBOTS.
‰ It relives man or hazardous or fatiguing tasks.
‰ It brings improvement in product consistency
and
‰ It offers opportunities for multi-machine
manning, for multishift operation and for wholly
unmanned production.
‰ In countries short of labour, it brings in savings
from labour reductions. It increases the output
without increasing the labour forces.
‰ Robots will lead the way into areas of technology
where man has not entered so far.
‰ Mobile robots with moving arms and wide
sensing power will find more applications.

Robotics is an absolutely fascinating field
that interests most people - AI buff or not. As
research from more serious robotics projects
such as Cog and Kismet filter down into the
commercial arena we should look forward to
some very interesting (and cheap) virtual
pets like Aibo and the furbies. Hopefully,
commericial home-
home-based robots will also be
available for a price not more than an
expensive vacuum cleaner.
