What makes a VRF air conditioning system efficient?
The performance and efficiency of any typical VRF system is determined by its Part Load
performance.
The Rated COP and EER values shown within all manufactures sales literature, are based on
100% operational load. These figures do not necessarily represent a true reflection of the
actual building load requirements.
100%

At Mid load, the

At very low load, the efficiency of a VRF
efficiency of a VRF system increases
system is reduced to above the rated value
below the rated value

System selection is determined by the 100% load for both Peak heating and cooling
temperatures, therefore there is a general excess of capacity throughout the majority of the
year.
It is therefore extremely important that the performance operation of any VRF
system is at its greatest during these middle part load conditions.

Sub Cooling Heat Exchanger
New and unique to the SMMS-e, is the newly develop sub cooling
heat exchanger. This new design ensure maximum performance and
system reliability.
Ph Diagram What Is Sub-Cooling
Sub-cooling is the termed used
whereby the refrigerant
temperature falls below its
normal saturation point.
The benefits of sub cooling a
liquid is an increase in FCU
capacity output with little or no
change in compressor output.
This increases both system
performance and overall system
efficiency.
How has SMMS-e evolved to benefit me?
Sub Cooling Heat Exchanger
The new sub heat exchanger is located on the liquid pipe after the
liquid tank, just before the refrigerant pipe leaves the CDU and
onwards towards the indoor units.
How has SMMS-e evolved to benefit me?
Sub Cooling Heat Exchanger
The new sub heat exchanger operates via a pipe within a pipe method.
This maximizes performance, by minimizing energy loses during the
transfer of energy between the two refrigerant flows.

How has SMMS-e evolved to benefit me?
Sub Cooling Heat Exchanger
There are a number of benefits to the new sub cool heat exchanger,
both in cooling and heating modes.

Cooling Operation
During cooling operation the new sub
cool heat exchanger lowers the
temperature of the liquid refrigerant,
increasing the FCU cooling capacity.
New sub cool heat exchanger allows
the system to reduce the flow of
refrigerant for the same capacity.
Increasing overall system efficiency.
Reduced flow rate and pressure
losses, allow the system to use
smaller pipe work for the suction
(gas) line , reducing the cost of the
installation
How has SMMS-e evolved to benefit me?
Sub Cooling Heat Exchanger
There are a number of benefits to the new sub cool heat exchanger,
both in cooling and heating modes.

Heating Operation
During heating operation, if conditions
permit, it is possible to use the new
sub cool heat exchanger, to inject low
pressure / temperature refrigerant into
the suction line of the compressor.
This increases suction pressures and
reduces the overall compressor
running temperatures, improving
systems efficiency and compressor
reliability.
How has SMMS-e evolved to benefit me?
Sub Cooling Heat Exchanger
The new sub-cool heat exchanger, also means less refrigerant is
needed to provide the same level of capacity and it is therefore
possible to reduce some of the refrigerant pipe sizes, reducing
installation costs.

Intelligent VRF Control
VRF Control Development
In the case of a new 8Hp SMMS-e system, there are more than 70 indoor
sensors, which the CDU can use to optimize the flow of refrigerant around all
indoor units satisfying the demands of each room individually
Intelligent VRF Control
VRF Control Development
Without intelligent VRF control, distribution of refrigerant across each indoor
unit within a building can become uneven, resulting in over capacity on some
units and low capacity on others
Over Capacity
Indoor units receive too much refrigerant,
starving the other units located further
from the outdoor.

Under Capacity
Indoor units receive too little refrigerant,
resulting in poor capacity output and room
temperature control.
Intelligent VRF Control
VRF Control Development
With intelligent VRF control, the refrigerant volume is adjusted to maintain
consistent temperature, regardless of indoor unit location

Continuous Heating
Standard Defrost Operation
The majority of heat pump units incorporate a reverse cycle defrost, into the
system control. The negative point of this control is that the indoor units will
stop operation.
Heating Mode
During heating mode the temperature of
Frost
the outdoor coil drops below the
HEAT
ambient temperature causing frost to
form.
The frost must be removed in order to
maintain capacity and efficiency output.

Defrost Mode
HEAT To remove the frost the CDU reverses
Fan OFF operation and send hot gas to the
outdoor coil and melts the ice.
Liquid refrigerant is then sent to the
indoor units, reducing the coil
temperature and stopping the fan
Continuous Heating
Standard Defrost Operation
The previous SMMS-i model uses the temperature of the outdoor coil,
to determine the degree of frosting on the coil. Once the temperature
falls below the trigger point the system will stop and enter into a
defrost operation, for a maximum of 12 minutes.

Continuous Heating
Continuous Heating
The new SMMS-e system incorporates a new control based on
continually monitoring the status of the outdoor coil. Once the control
senses that the outdoor coil is beginning to frost, the hot gas by-pass
operation will start, melting any frost and allowing the indoor units to
continue to heat, at a reduced capacity.

Continuous Heating
The new continuous heating operation, operates via two new solenoid
valves, which are located prior to the inlet of the main and lower heat

Reliability
Oil Management
The SMMS-e control continually monitors the real time oil level inside each

optimum amount of oil inside each of the compressors. This is achieved by
system oil retrieval controls and a dedicated oil balance line between CDUs.

Reliability
CDU Modulation Control
In addition to the rotational control of individual compressors inside each
CDU, the new SMMS-e system also has the ability to modulate the operation
of the CDUs, to best suit the local ambient conditions and indoor demand

CDU Modulation
To ensure the long term reliability of the
module, the SMMS-e system will modulate
which CDU will operate and those that will
remain in back-up, until demand requires
them to start.

Heat Exchanger Modulation

The SMMS-e system has the ability to vary
the available size of the total module heat
exchanger area, so that it can optimise the
overall systems efficiency, performance
and reliability, depending on a
combination of capacity demand and local
ambient conditions.
Reliability
Compressor Backup
The SMMS-e continues the with the same compressor and CDU backup
control as per the previous SMMS-i model, allowing system operation even
when one compressor or CDU has stopped operating.
