DO YOU AGREE???

Computers, in general,
are pretty stable, and
you can usually rely on
them to not fail you.
YES, IF.

you develop some basic

habits, you can postpone
serious computer problems,

MALWARE ISSUES

Malwareis an abbreviated term

meaning malicious software
designed to gain access or
damage a computer without the
knowledge of the owner.

There are various types of malware

includingspyware, key loggers,
true viruses, worms.
TO PREVENT MALWARE ISSUES

Make sure that your anti-

virus software is updated to
be able to scan unnecessary
files that enter your PC.
Do not install programs
that youre not familiar with
or if you do not fully trust
the source.

NETWORK PROBLEMS

When you suddenly cannot connect to the

Internet, use this checklist to fi nd and solve
common Internet connection problems.

NETWORK PROBLEMS

When you suddenly cannot connect to the

Internet, use this checklist to fi nd and solve
common Internet connection problems.
UNPLUGGED NETWORK CABLE
Action:
Ensure your wired or wireless network
hardware is switched on and plugged in.

WEBSITE TEMPORARILY OFFLINE

Action: Before assuming your Internet
connection is faulty, try visiting several
popular Web sites rather than just one.
IP ADDRESS CONFLICTS

(for dynamic connections follow these steps)

1. ClickStart>Run. In theRunwindow, enter
cmd then clickOK.
2. On the command prompt, type
ipconfi g/release then press[Enter].
3. Once the IP address becomes0.0.0.0, enter
ipconfi g/renew then press[Enter].

If your network uses static IP addresses,

manually change your IP to a diff erent number.
COMPUTER FIREWALL
MALFUNCTIONS
Firewall software is intended to prevent
unwanted network traffi c from disrupting it.
Unfortunately, fi rewalls can malfunction and start
blocking valid Internet traffi c.

Action: Temporarily disable fi rewall to

determine whether it may be the cause of
Internet connection problems.
OUTSIDE WIRELESS SIGNAL
RANGE
The performance of Wi-Fi network connections
depends on distance between the device and the
wireless access point.

Action: Use one of the following options:

1. Place the router at a height in some central
location and away from other cordless devices.
2. Make sure that the router is not placed near
something metallic (window grills) as that will
weaken the wireless signals.
OUTSIDE WIRELESS SIGNAL
RANGE
Action: Use one of the following options:

3. Avoid mirrors as they can refl ect the

wireless signals away from the desired
direction.
4. Replace routers omni-directional
antennas with more powerful uni-
directional antennas to keep the signal
from getting broadcast in all directions.
WIRELESS NETWORK
CONFIGURATION
Wi-Fi networks with encryption options like WPA
or WEP turned on require computers to use
matching security keys when connecting .

Action: Confi rm that the Wi-Fi channel number

and encryption keys on your router have not
recently changed
NETWORK PROBLEMS

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a security

standard for users of computers equipped
with Wi-Fi wireless connection. It is an
improvement on and is expected to replace
the original Wi-Fi security standard, Wired
Equivalent Privacy (WEP).
BROADBAND ROUTER OR
ACCESS POINT MALFUNCTIONS
Broadband Router failures are caused by
overheating, excessive traffi c, or simply a
faulty unit. Typical symptoms include not being
able to obtain IP addresses, or the router
console not responding to requests

Action: Check the router's lights if it is

running and responding properly. Troubleshoot
and reset the router if necessary.
BLOCKED BY YOUR SERVICE
PROVIDER

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can

choose to block access from your
account if you fail to make payment
or otherwise violate the provider's
Terms of Service.

Action: Contact your ISP if you

suspect your account has been
blocked.
NETWORK DOWNTIME

May notice during periods of very

bad weather and in dense urban
areas.

Action : Contact your Internet

provider to verify if they are
experiencing an outage. They may
give you advice on troubleshooting
problems connecting to their
network.
COMPUTER GLITCHES

Computer's network adapter hardware

might suddenly fail due to overheating or
age. Viruses and worms also may disable
or block a computer's network interfaces
from functioning properly.

Action: Check the computer and

remove any malware that you will
fi nd. Try resetting the network
connection or reboot the computer.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?

As a CHS student what is importance of

identifying common faults of a computer
and network system?

What is the common cause of a faulty

computer?

Give the causes of network problems.

How will you know whether a computer is

already experiencing a problem?

error messages and network problems you
encountered. Create a POWERPOINT
PRESENTATION for it.
