Module 2: Preparing for ELLs

Overall Vision
Create a welcoming and comfortable learning environment
Make sure ELLs are valued and their culture is respected
Provide ELL students with opportunity and multiple supports
Set high expectations and attainable goals
Create a positive relationship with ELLs and their families with
constant communication
Get the most out of my students! Empower ELLs to learn to
their maximum potential.
Goals and Procedures
Actively participate in welcoming the new students and
families to the school or class.
Be involved in the initial assessment process and review
results. Devise a plan regarding placement, accommodations,
modifications, resources and supports for ELL student and
family.
Create a comfortable learning environment in the classroom,
stressing respect, accountability and acceptance.
Get to know your students! Have students introduce
themselves and talk a little about their interests, culture,
hobbies etc.
Communicate with families regularly. Make them aware of
resources and supports available to them.
Incorporate multiculturalism into classroom. Encourage use of
native language. Display signs, texts, celebrate all holidays,
learn about different cultures.
Encourage ELLs and families to get involved in extracurricular
activities (clubs, sports, student/parent council.)
Resources
Literacy materials available in necessary
languages in classroom and school library.

Signs are displayed reflecting all cultures


throughout the classroom.

Collaboration with the ELLs interpreter, family,


supporting staff, assessors and administrators.

Provide opportunity for students to use each


other as resources.(Group work, partner work
and whole group collaboration.)

Multiple component of technology will be


available. (Smartboard, laptops, iPad, audio
books.)

Teacher
Get to know your ELL. Learn about their culture, traditions
and interests to help with implementation of teaching styles.
Leave all societal assumptions of a particular group out of
the classroom.
Create a positive and engaging learning environment
Communicate regularly with ELLs family and supporting staff.
Celebrate achievement and goals met!
Attend professional workshops and continue to learn yourself.
Collaborate with the ELLs supporting team.
Integrate family and culture into classroom and lessons

Respect differences and diversity in the classroom and school
Make ELL student feel welcome and respected in and out of
the classroom

Instructional Strategies and
Accommodations

Review initial assessment and create developmentally


appropriated lessons for ELL student.
Provide ELL with accommodations and modifications
necessary.
Develop lessons and activities that are engaging and
motivating to students.
Incorporate differentiated instruction to support varied
learning styles (visuals, kinesthetic, technology.)
Model aspects of learning that may be difficult to
students.
Provide opportunity for students to learn for their peers
(group work, partner work, whole group.)
Make sure to check for understanding during lessons
and activities.
Be conscience of pace of speech and use of wording for
ELL students.
Use a variety of forms of assessment.
