Causes
Between the 5th and the 12th weeks of
pregnancy, while the fetus is growing and
developing, nerve cells form in the
digestive tract, For unknown reasons, the
nerve cells do not grow past a certain
point in the intestine in babies with
Hirschsprung's disease.
Who is at Risk?
1 in 5000 newborns
4 boys for every 1 girl are affected.
Children with Down syndrome have 50
times higher risk of having Hirschsprung's
disease.
There is possibly a genetic, or inherited,
cause for Hirschsprung's disease.
How to Diagnose
Abdominal x-ray
Barium enema
Anorectal manometry
Biopsy of the rectum or large
intestine
Treatment
Surgery 2 steps :
1. Colostomy
2. Resection Duhamel
Swenson
Soave
Complication
Enterocolitis
Perforation
Peritonitis
Sepsis
Mal absorption
