BUILDING DESIGN
WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY???

Meeting the needs of the present wiothout Sustainable Development is a pattern of economic
compromising the ability of future generations to development in which resource use aims to meet the human
meet their needs needs while preserving the environment, so that these needs
can be met not only in the present but also for generations to
Prime Minister of Norway, Gro Brundtland 1987 come.

Bearable = keep interaction of human to its environment

still as pristine as naturally.
Equitable = keep intergeneration equity in resources.
Viable = keep our life style is not to end as consumption
Three pillars of sustainability phase only, but also understanding the minimalistic
requirement of it.
THREATS OF SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT?
1. Population Growth 2. Urbanization 3. Energy use and Global Warming

4. Water Shortage and Scarcity 5. Waste Management

SUSTAINABLE BUILDING Holistic approach about building design structure
Parameters of Sustainable Building Design : based on :
1. Resource should naturally regenerate and discard Strength through durability rather than durability
which local ecosystem can absorb through strength
2. Site plan should utilizing the solar energy, wind
energy, natural shading and drainage.
3. Resource-efficient materials should be used in
construction buillding
4. Energy and waste materials should be minimized
through building life cycle (design demolition)
and do a recycling system.
5. The building should be design as concept passive
design that maximize occupant health and
productivity.
6. Water should be managed as limited resource
7. Location and system should be minimized the
using of transportation (emission)
GREEN BUILDING RATING SYSTEMS

1. LEED-NC (New Construction),

2009
2. LEED-ND (Neighborhood
Development)
BUILDING CODES AND GREEN
DEVELOPMENT
Refer to : International Organization for Standardization.
Council of American Buildings Officials (CABO), 1992
American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air- 1. ISO 1539:2008 = applicable to buildings and other
Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), 1989 construction works
2. ISO 1568-6:2004 = describes how to identifies
1. Energy Codes : enviromental impacts of buildong design
Purposes : 3. ISO/TS 21929-1:2006 = gives parameters/ guidelines/
Saving more energy indicators for sustainability building
Moving to reduce GHGs 4. ISO 21930:2007 = describes the principles of
Eventually require net zero energy and carbon neutral sustainable buildings life cycle
buildings
More encourage about buildings envelope, mechanics and
lighting.

2. Building Model Codes :

Purposes :
Encourage strategies building orientation, shading, passive
energy resources, minimum insulation level/ walls.
SUSTAINABLE BUILDING
PROGRAM
1. Brownfield Redevelopment 2. Green Highways Partnership
Defined as sites that are abandoned, idled because an Defined as a transprtation facilities that develop green
expansion industrial field or disaster. development concept.
Remedial techniques
to remove
contamination :
Bioremediation
In situ oxidation
Soil vapor
extraction
Phytoremediation
(disposed a
hazardous waste)
Main goal :
Restoring urban property to productive use
Increase job oppurtunities and local tax revenues Main goal :
Improved public health and environment Use natural methods to reduce and cleans run off
Utilization of existing public infrastructure Protect hydrology of wetlands and stream channels
Eliminating neighborhood blight Promote wildlife corridors and its habitats
Reduce pollution of CO2 and other pollutan gases
CASE STUDIES OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
Pearl River Tower, China
Spesification :
Located in Guangzhou China
71 stories
309,6 m tall
214,100 m2 area
Already completed in 2011
Has a pair of 6 x 6,8 m size opening at levels 24 and 48
Consume 58% less energy than other structure (same size)
Features both active and passive approaches to limiting
carbon emissions through new technologies (wind and solar).
Methodologies :
Orienting the building to take advantage midday sun or
natural lighting (north-south facades), using double glass
system (reduces heeat).
Using chilled slab-concrete vaulted ceiling system cools
ventilation.
Achieve zero net energy by using some power-generating
technologies : wind - microturbines, solar -photovoltaic
cells, biomass waste alternative fuel, water rain
harvesting.
The fact our planet is at peril due to a global warming and numerous environment
problems.....

One of the solution is Sustainable Building, that should be energy efficient,

incorporate concrete with least amount PC, use larger SCM and recycled agregates
to gain emergence of zero energy building and reduce dependence on fossil fuel
which cause global warming...

So its important for us to applicate green building rating, system and its life cycle for
better future....

....Thank you....
