Flexi WCDMA BTS

Flexi WCDMA BTS Construction

A Flexi WCDMA BTS can consist of:

One System Module (FSMx), equipped with one transmission sub-module
One System Extension Module (FSMx) without a transmission sub-module operating
in Baseband extension mode (Flexi System Externsion Kit (FSKA) required)
One to three RF Modules or Remote Radio Heads, depending on the radio module
type
One optional outdoor capable Flexi Power Module (FPMA) that can house a maximum
of four sub-modules:
One to three optional AC/DC converter sub-modules (FPAA)
One to three optional battery sub-modules (FPBA)
Multiradio Combiners (MRC), parts of the Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Antenna
Systems for co-siting GSM and WCDMA BTSs occupying the same frequency band.
MRCs provide an AISG/3GPP carrier signal and a DC power path between BTS and
antenna. When modules are installed without a cabinet, the following items are
available:
Mounting Covers front/back for each module for installations without a cabinet (FMCA
for 3U modules and FMCB for 2U modules), mandatory in outdoor installations
Flexi Mounting Kit Floor/Wall/Pole for installations without a cabinet (FMFA). A
minimum of one plinth is required for a stack installation and one plinth per two modules
in pole and wall installations.
Flexi WCDMA BTS Channel capacity

Channel capacity by SW Licence

Flexi System Module channel capacity is designed to support flexible and cost-optimised
site capacity evolution. Standard Operating SW of the System Module rel. 1 (FSMB)
includes support for 32 Channel Elements (CE) to be used for Common Channels. With
the System Module rel. 2 (FSMC/D/E), Common Channels for most typical
configurations are included in Standard Operating SW and the operator does not need
take them into account in Channel Element dimensioning. The channel capacity of Flexi
WCDMA BTS can be optimised depending on the BTS configuration and the required
traffic capacity of the BTS site. More channel capacity will be allocated remotely from
NetActTM by sending Channel Capacity SW Licence to Flexi WCDMA BTS. For further
information, see section Licence management.
The minimum number of Channel Elements allocated by SW Licence is one (1) CE
supporting both uplink and downlink. Therefore, Flexi WCDMA BTS site capacity can be
optimised in the step of one CE without a site visit.

RF Module
The RF Module and Remote Radio Head (RRH) are stand-alone fully operational transceiver
modules with integrated antenna filters. The RF Module is able to support one to three
sectors, whereas the RRH supports one sector in a Flexi WCDMA base station. The RF
Module and RRH host the RF functionality and provide control and power supply to the Flexi
Antenna Line. Radio-related signal processing is performed in the RF Module. The RF
module has integrated fans and Bias-Ts. The RRH does not have any fans.
There are three types of RF Modules available:
Triple RF Module
Dual RF Module
Single RF Module
The RF Module can support one to three sectors with the following integrated components:
Transceivers with TX for two carriers (three transceivers in the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual and one
in the Single RF Module)
Transceivers with RX for two carriers with diversity (the carriers must be adjacent) (three transceivers in
the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual and one in the Single RF Module)
Linear power amplifiers (three in the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual and one in the Single RF Module)
RF filters with main and div branch (three in the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual and one in the Single
RF Module)
48 V DC input power supply
Masthead amplifier and 3GPP Antenna tilt power feed and control for up to three sectors
Interface to the System Module
Interface for chaining System Modules (Triple RF Module only)
Integrated fan assembly (two fans)
Full operational bandwidth support
Antenna connector interfaces
Prepared for AISG2.0
The Triple RF Module has three independent transceivers each composed of one transmitter chain and two
independent uplink chains to implement uplink diversity. The unit integrates an antenna filter unit that
contains three filter blocks, each composed of one duplex filter (main antenna) and RX filter (diversity
antenna), providing six antenna connectors for the BTS antenna line. The transceivers can be configured
independently to
dual or single carrier modes.
The Dual RF Module has four dual carrier receivers that facilitate two dual carrier receivers with 2-way
uplink diversity and it can therefore support multiple configurations. The Single RF Module is a half capacity
version of the Dual RF Module. It has one TX/RX output that supports a maximum of two TX carriers (two
carriers per TX chain). There is one RX output connector as well.
The RF Module uses nominal 48 V DC for internal power supply. The FRGD can also use
nominal 100/240 V AC (optional unit), which increases the power consumption by
approximately 10 %.
The main and diversity branches include Bias-Ts with lightning strike protectors (Single and
Dual RF Module). The main branch (Tx/Rx) Bias-T is used for Flexi Antenna Line and MHA
support. It supports Current Window Alarm (CWA) mode, and 3GPP and AISG 2.0 interfaces
(the FRGJ and FRGK also support the proprietary AISG 1.1 interface for NBxx replacements).
The diversity (Div Rx) branch Bias-T is only used for MHA support in Current Window Alarm
(CWA) mode. The main branch also includes an Antenna Line VSWR Monitor (power meter
for forward and reflected voltage ratio measuring). The
operating voltages fed via main antenna line are 0 V DC/+12 V DC/+28.5 V DC and via
diversity antenna line 0 V DC/+12 V DC. The VSWR monitoring system is used for producing
alarms for the antenna line condition against alarm threshold (RRH, Single, Dual and Triple
RF Module). As a default setting, the minor alarm will be generated when the VSWR is 1.9
and major alarm (cell down) will be generated when the VSWR is 2.6. However, it is possible
to adjust both minor and major alarm threshold between 1.5-3.5. The antenna line does not
provide any alarms without a valid licence (Line Supervision RAN907LK).
AISG1.1 RET Antenna Line Device configuration is supported with the FRGG, FRGF,
FRGJ, and FRGK.

FRFA)
Functional blocks of the Single RF Module (FRIB, FRGK, FRCB, FRDB,

Power consumption of the RF Module
Power consumption of the RF Module (contd.)

Maximum power consumption values consist of power feed to MHA + antenna tilt (1x30 W with the Single
RF Module, 2x30 W with the Dual and 3x30 W with the Triple RF Module). Up to 50 W/100 W/150 W
(Single/Dual/Triple) higher power consumption can exist in extreme conditions and in BTS output power
overdrive situations. In possible short-circuit cases (for instance, antenna line) power consumption can
momentarily be
higher. The values are given for the 2.1 GHz radio frequency (RF) module. For other RF module variants,
power consumption can increase by a maximum of 10 %. In case the Single RF Module uses an optional AC
power supply (FPAB), the power consumption is 10% higher compared to the values in the table above.

Overview of Flexi WCDMA BTS transmission

Flexi WCDMA BTS System Module contains a transmission sub-module that provides the
physical Iub interface to the radio network controller (RNC) or I-HSPA Adapter. The
System Module can be configured with different variants:
PDH (copper),
microwave radios (Flexbus), and
SDH (fibre optics)
Ethernet (copper/fiber).
The transmission sub-module alternatives provide different interface types, namely 4- 16x
E1/T1/JT1, Ethernet, Flexbus and STM-1. For more infomation on transmission sub-
modules and the actual interface types on each unit refer to section Transmission sub-
modules.
The transport sub-modules featuring Ethernet ports can be set to different transport
modes in order to support PDH-based backhaul, ATM-over ethernet, traffic split to
different paths (Dual Iub) and IP based Iub. Migrating Flexi WCDMA BTS with these
transport sub-modules from an ATM-based 3GPP R99/R4 to IP-based 3 GPP R5
architecture does not require any hardware to be changed and can be executed remotely.
For more information on the transport mode refer to the appropriate chapters in this
documentation.

TXN modules
Transmission sub-modules

Transmission sub-modules (FTxx) provide the physical Iub interface to the RNC or IHSPA Adapter.
NSN Flexbus is a single-cable interface for Nokia Siemens Networks microwave radios. The Flexbus
sub-module (FTFA) provides all the functionality of an indoor unit, thus the actual radio (outdoor unit)
can be directly connected to it. It is also possible to configure chain sites using 2 Mbit cross
connections. From WN5.0 on, the FTFA transmission sub-module will support up to 16 E1 interfaces
internally, which can be configured in the TRS HW view of the BTS Site Manager, or during the
commissioning process.
The FTPB sub-module provides 8 PDH symmetrical physical interfaces, which can be configured to
work in E1, T1, or JT1 modes.
The FTEB sub-module provides 8 PDH asymmetrical (coaxial) interfaces in the E1 mode.
The FTHA sub-module provides 16 PDH interfaces for the Flexi WCDMA or Flexi WiMAX BTS system
module. It is intended for transport applications which need more than 8 PDH interfaces (available
e.g. with FTPB or FTEB) like radio links or Add-Drop-Multiplexer. The FTHA sub-module is delivered
with an FCTP cable with two MDR-68 connectors.
The FTIA sub-module allows the connectivity of the Iub interface by two different types of physical
interfaces. The 4 PDH symmetrical interfaces, which can be configured to work in the E1/T1/JT1
mode, are functionally identical to those provided in the FTPB sub-module. The three Ethernet
interfaces support ATM over Ethernet, Dual Iub or IP Iub backhaul modes.
The FTIB sub-module supports all the same features as the FTIA, the only exception being that the
FTIB supports also timing over packet according to IEEE1588v2. Note also the following:
1. only 2 Ethernet ports can be used simultaneously: optical + electrical or 2 electrical ones
2. 2 x 1000Base-TX electrical will be supported in the next release
3. Synchronous Ethernet is supported in next release.
The FTOA sub-module provides 1 optical SDH interface. The internal structure ofthe STM-1 signal is
ATM over VC-4 virtual container.

GSM/EDGE and WCDMA co-siting
Flexi WCDMA BTS is designed so that it is compatible with existing Nokia Siemens Networks BTSs and it is
easy to install on an existing site.
Mechanics
Flexi WCDMA BTS modules have much smaller space requirements than those of the Talk family and
UltraSite EDGE/WCDMA BTSs. Floor installations of modules can be done using the same fixing points.
Power system
When Flexi WCDMA BTS is installed to an existing GSM/EDGE BTS site, the same connection types and
power supply types can be used. The existing alarm connections, for example, the fire alarm and door alarm,
can also be connected to Flexi WCDMA BTS.
Antennas
To minimise the work in adding WCDMA antennas to GSM BTS sites, part of the existing antenna
infrastructure can be reused.
A diplexer is an attractive way to add the Flexi WCDMA BTS to the existing site, if the additional loss can be
tolerated in the antenna line. Actual losses depend on the combination but (for example) in the case of GSM
900/WCDMA, the typical loss is less than 0.5 dB. Nokia Siemens Networks supplies diplexers for all
necessary combinations.
The Multi Radio Combiner (MRC) solution makes it possible to build an antenna line sharing site with a
minimum effect on existing system performance. Downlink causes only a slight degradation for the BTS
performance. A typical downlink loss is less than 0.6 dB. The Mast Head Amplifier (MHA) will retain the uplink
performance.
There are three different MRC units that cover the bands: 850 MHz, 900 MHz and 2100 MHz. The MRC 850
and MRC 900 units give the possibility to co-siting GSM EDGE and WCDMA BTSs in the same frequency
band through antenna line sharing. There are no limitations to system frequency allocation (G-G-W, G-W-G,
W-G-G). The MRC 2100 unit allows WCDMA and WCDMA BTSs co-siting in the same frequency band
through
antenna line sharing. Using MRC units makes it also possible to co-site third-party BTSs.
Flexi WCDMA BTS mounting kits for GSM/EDGE BTS
Flexi WCDMA BTS modules can be installed inside an existing GSM/EDGE cabinet. There are three mounting
kits available that purpose: Flexi Mounting Kit Vertical for 2G (FMUA), Flexi Mounting Kit Horizontal for 2G
