Directions: We learn a great deal about the different

boys characters through their varying reactions to
Simons death.

The word murder, a term associated with the

system of law and a civilized moral code, now seems
strangely at odds with the collective madness on the
island.

We are reminded how far the boys have traveled

along the moral spectrum since the time when they
were forced to follow the rules of adults. Analyze how

Ch. 11 Exit Assessment
As civilization and order have eroded among the
boys, so has the power and influence of various
symbols. As Jacks power reaches its high point, the
figures of the beast and the Lord of the Flies attain
prominence.

Similarly, as Ralphs power reaches its low point, the

influence and importance of other symbols in the
novel change.

Analyze and explain how the symbols below have

changed over time! What was their initial meaning,
and what do they represent at this point in the story?
